What if the French Colonized Australia? Lets say the British were focusing more on their other colonies to Ignore Australia for a while, what would happen if it was left open to foreign powers?
Ore what about the Netherlands doing the colonizing. What if the French Colonized Australia? Lets say the British were focusing more on their other colonies to Ignore Australia for a while, what would happen if it was left open to foreign powers?
The Dutch were never realy interested in it. though I could see them colonising Western Australia as an halfway point towards the Dutch East Indies (and yes the travel routes are close to Australia). That said, I dont think the Dutch half the presense in the late 18th and 19th century anymore. The eastern half tough, I doubt it. It could be done by the French though.Ore what about the Netherlands doing the colonizing.
Well if it is not the British ore Dutch, the French are the only other candidate left to colonize Australia ore what ever they will call it.The Dutch were never realy interested in it. though I could see them colonising Western Australia as an halfway point towards the Dutch East Indies (and yes the travel routes are close to Australia). Maybe the Portuguese or the Spanish, although both are doubtful, especialy as late as the 18th century. Denmark and Sweden are too small and Australia won't be empty long enough for the Germans or Italians to colonise it. So yes, if not the English or Dutch, it is most likely the French, assuming a late 18th century POD.Well if it is not the British ore Dutch, the French are the only other candidate left to colonize Australia ore what ever they will call it.
Found something related to Spain, it seemed they did have plans for invading Australia: Spain planned to 'invade' the British colony in Australia in 1790s with 100-vessel armadaMaybe the Portuguese or the Spanish, although both are doubtful, especialy as late as the 18th century. Given enough time the Maori could go for Tasmania and you could see Aborigine (puppet) states form once European contact becomes deep enough.
Walvis Bay in modern Namibia. That was a site canvassed in OTL.Well, without Australia or the Thirteen Colonies, where would Britain send their prisoners? Barbados?
