What if a Union spy had assassinated Jefferson Davis?

This nerdy thread I created made me think: what if we applied the same standards of Westeros to real life rulers? And it made me realize that this was most definitely the case in the U.S. at least, where assassination was taboo and Booth was very much reviled for killing Lincoln. So, what if the flip side had occurred? What if a Unionist had killed Davis?

Stephens would become President of the Confederation... But when this assassination takes place? If it happens early during civil war then there is a slight chance that Stephens could have negotiated terms with Lincoln... He was against the secession of the South if i remember correctly but he was pro-slavery also...

Stephens might have been a better commander-in-chief than Davis, but he had no pretensions of being a military man and would have been happy to allow a competent Secretary of War or General-in-Chief handle military matters. He also would have not been hobbled by Davis' insane willingness to appoint incompetent friends (Polk and Northop being the worst examples). He also would have gotten along better with Joseph Johnston, a seemingly minor but absolutely crucial factor.

These, I think, are the interesting keys. Quick, someone start a timeline.

Does it happen before or after Seven Days?

What would be other 'critical' moments where a switch would have the biggest impacts?
