What happens to the Democratic Party in a CSA victory

I've heard people say the republican devolve back into the whigs but I have never heard of what happens to the Democrats after a southern victory?

You should read Turtledove's TL-191. Good stuff.
I'm on setteling accounts: Return to engagemnet right now but I have heard people say some very critical things about the series so I wanted to see what people on the forum think would have happend to the Democratic party.

One thing I've always wondered is why the Democratic Party, a major party of the rebellious south, seems to always remain a party in the Union in these scenarios. While I can see the Republicans getting some serious setbacks, wouldn't people have a much harder backlash against the Copperheads and the party they were from(even if it didn't fully support them)?

In the years b/w the demise of the Whigs and the beginning of the CW, the Dems were the only real national party left. Even in 1860, in a four-way split, Douglas still got 30% of the vote, most of which came from the northern states (Illinois gave him 47%, for example). Besides, if the CW is fought and the South wins, then the Copperheads were right all along to argue that the CSA should be allowed to seceed.

both the democrats and the republicans would proably fall apart and then simply reorganize. The dems would be seen as those who let the south go, while the reps will be seen as those who could not keep the south and caused the war.
there probably be a little political instablily for a while.the parties might splinter people will disagree on what to do next. everyone will be assiging blame to everyone else. but ultimatly mabe by the second elections everyone would be reorganized back into former party lines. the partys might be called difrent, so they can disenfranchise themselves from the past. but my guess is that they will ultimatly consist of the exdems and the exreps

Like most I've always assumed the Democrats remain in the south and totally dominate it into the immideate future. While a Whig or Liberal Party forms to its left though can't see it mattering too much.

In the north, the Reps might end joining with the Populists to form a broadly progressive party.

Possibly. It probably depends partly on HOW the South secedes. The Democrats could easily spin a 'peace with honor', or 'we're not fratricidal maniacs' or something similar, and keep some major core. Certainly enough to rule the country for a while until the neo-whigs re-coalesce.
