What happens if Saddam invades Saudi Arabia instead of Kuwait in 1991?

How far does he get?And how much harder will it be to get his forces out of there? Will he do something like trying to base forces in the Holy Cities? Will the Saudi Armed Forces be able to hold him at bay? So many questions...lol.

American continues to support bin Laden in order to further its goals in the region, who continues to fight to remove 'foreign invaders' from the 'holy land.'

Seriously though, the US plays up Islamic extremism in order to rally support for their primary source of petroleum.

Why would Iraq attack Saudi Arabia in the first place? Their reasons for moving into Kuwait were stronger.

Um... America supported bin Laden in Afghanistan against the Soviets. Not in Iraq against Hussein.

I think he was referring to the US supporting some sort of "Mujahadeen" to oust Hussein from Saudi Arabia.

Regardless I think that is unlikly as I doubt the Iraqi's would capture all of Saudi Arabia without the US intervening.

Apparently Saddam had an initial plan to take Kuwait and the Northern Saudi oil fields simultaneously.

I had a mate over there at the time. He was a former RAAF instructor who was in Riyadh at the time teaching their air force. When Saddam went into Kuwait the Saudi’s expected him in Riyadh within a day or two.

My mate and another Australian pilot decided that if Saddam crossed the border they would “borrow” two PC-9s, fly to a highway halfway to Egypt, land, siphon the fuel from on aircraft into the other, and fly on to Cairo in the remaining PC-9.

He wouldn't do it because of the almost certain miltary response from the west.

He seemed to think that an invasion of Kuwait would be tolerated. There are lots of conspiracy theories about how the Americans tricked him into it as an excuse to go into the Middle East in force etc.

If he moved into Saudi then the Saudi army would fold and run. I would have enjoyed watching it on TV.

Well, if he does capture them before the West can mount an effective response, and he retreats from there in the same manner he did in Kuwait.......

At least the Soviet Union would then survive.

Oh.

Umm.

Good?

Well, I did not mean it in a good way, but it is Gorbachev's Soviet Union, so I am not sure how it would have finally developed. Point is, with the major oil fields in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait destroyed, or at least beyond repair for years, with oil gushing into the Gulf, the Soviet Union is going to become the lifeline of Europe. Their economic slump ends, giving Gorbachev additional political capital. Of course, this also means that the United States has to find other sources of fuel for the time being, or at least different sellers. I find it hard that they may approach Iran, but it is possible. Same thing with the Soviet Union, though most of that oil will be arriving in Europe.
