What flag to the Scandinavians adopt if not the Nordic Cross flag?

I'm not sure which forum to ask this in, but assuming Scandinavians fail to adopt the Nordic Cross as their flag style what kind of flags do the Nordic countries fly? A Christian Scandinavia could surely have found a non-cross-based flag given we make a few historical handwaves, so Paganism doesn't even have to be involved in the PoD (although it can). Would we see symbols like the Seeblatts being adopted by Danes and the traditional lion by the Norwegians? What do the Swedes adopt?

And what kind of butterflies, if any, can a differently-designed flag cause?

Sweden used to have a flag that featured a number of horizontal stripes, alternating blue and yellow. You could have other Scandinavian states adopt similar flags based on the colours of their arms:

Norway: red and yellow
Denmark: yellow and blue
Iceland: blue and white

The issues I can see with this are that Denmark's would be very similar to Sweden's, and that as yellow is likely to fade to white in the sunlight, both Denmark's and Sweden's would wind up looking similar to Iceland's. Otherwise, the royal banners could be adapted to become flags.

Probably variations on this historical Norway flag:

Sweden could have a blue background with gold lion, Denmark a white background with a red lion, and Finland a white background with blue or green lion.

The flag is not historical, and was only designed in 1905, though the arms it was based on are historic.

Yeah, its most logical if they would lean on the historical national coat of arms, unless the lack of a distinct national flag and the usage of a flag much more explicitly tied to the royal estate, would lead to another kind of flag to be used in a rebellion of some kind (similar to the history of the french tricolore) and from there on being promoted into becoming the nations flag

Heraldic flags are indeed a possibility, but flags based on the deeds, beliefs or claims off past (or current) monarchs could also be adopted.

Finland could use a swastika in its flag, since it prominently used the swastika pre-WWII (including pre-Hitler) in its symbolism and to this day still does in a limited context. That might affect the symbolism of other Finnic nations like Karelia and a few small minorities in Russia like the Veps.

For Scandinavia itself, I wonder if butterflying the union of Denmark with Norway and especially the Kalmar Union would prevent the Nordic cross flag from being used outside of Denmark, leaving Sweden and Norway (and other Nordic nations) to come up with their own symbolism.

Sweden could have a blue background with gold lion, Denmark a white background with a red lion, and Finland a white background with blue or green lion.

Finland would've used red and gold since the traditional coat of arms of Finland (granted, in the historic sense of Finland as the lands immediately around Turku, i.e. "Finland Proper") were red and gold. The blue and white were originally from one of the Russian flags, although I guess if Russia still takes over Finland then Finland could still use a blue and gold flag.

You could add red to the Danish colours as the blue lions on the yellow shield are supplemented by red leafs/hearts in the so called "small coat of arms" of Denmark.
But anyway, without the strong tradition of the crossbanner I guess some kind of tricolore will prevail in 19th century as it did in most places outside Scandinavia and UK.

Denmark's flag could remain the same, since it's the "original" Nordic cross flag.

Sweden could retain the striped blue and yellow flag.

Norway could adopt a flag based on the country's coat of arms.

The flag Iceland briefly adopted in 1809 (three stockfishes in the first quarter on a blue field) looks cool, and could be revived, maybe.

The Faroe Islands could retain the flag they used in the 19th century, or update its design.
