What Events in the Late Soviet Union could be avoided to lessen instability?

His choices were reasonable in context, sure, but their undercutting of the Soviet system was inevitable too.

Undermining the Party itself sure undercut the Soviet system, but the other reforms he tried were not, I think too fundamentally fatal.

And there were plenty of reform paths he didn't try which may have provided some benefit while being compatible with the system.

True, some reforms were helpful, but I wonder if they came too late to prolong meaningfully the USSR.
