What effect would a bloodied, longer and costlier war with the Mormons have on history.

Watching Narcos, I suddenly felt, that the Mormons could also have fought against Yankee encroachment to the bitter end.

If say, such a war ends with much bloodshed, what effect would it have on history . Would frontier law be better?

Could the entire Mormon religion have been
wiped out if things got really bad? (Ameri-
cans can be really savage when they want to
be- just look @ the long history of lynchings
in the South). At the very least, far tougher
conditions would be imposed on Utah when
it sought to become a State then were placed on it IOTL.

Had Brigham Young not migrated large groups to Utah, the Mormons would have dispersed into minor sects like the RLDS, now Community of Christ. Once they became established in Utah, though, there was no turning back. The Mormons were too valuable in westward settlement, especially by the time of the transcontinental railroad. They themselves had too much to lose if they fought too hard. Fundamentalist Mormons could have moved farther into frontier areas, out of sight.
