What if there was an extended/better-financed NASA. I also hear 'The Tranquility Alternative' by Allan Steele, or 'Voyage' by Stephen Baxter; both are excellent "better-space-program" novels.

private companies in space - like the US Postal Service with their rocket planes zipping about.

Also in regards to enhacing electronics and computers.. I vouch for Babbage and Lovelace.

Computers use electricity

Since computers use electricity then when electricity is available. A steam powered computer dosn't seem feasable to me. Earlier micro chips ?

It seems kind of odd, but keep the Nazis from coming to power. Instead of OTL's 2-way space race, you might have a 5-way race among the USA, USSR, UK, Germany, and Japan -- the latter three not having been broken by war, and still being far and away the other largest economies in the world. Maybe an alternate Versailles treaty that sets up a mutual beneficial world trade regime, and therefore also avoids the Great Depression. You could have transistors being mass-produced by the 1940s, a moon landing in the 1950s, and the alt-IBM Watson by 2000.
