What could be an alternative to the Islamic Revolution?

In a world that Iran had been ruled in a manner that transition to a secular democratic regime would be (at least more) easier, how would the outcome of 1979 would be? Considering external interventions Iranian people experienced, political traumas and Shah's autocratic regime, a radical change was likely inevitable. Even at the beginning of the 1979 Incident, people didn't expect a Mullah regime but instead what they all wanted to do is removing royalty's pressure.

Do you think a military coup, civil war or a rebellion is possible? When and how would it take place?

As a POD, i think a scenario where Iran is ruled by Timurids or Ilkhanates until 20th century. We may observe clearly that nomadic and indochinese Muslims adapted more easily to Secularism. Turkey, which is one of the 3 countries on the world that bares secularism within his constitution. Indonesia is equally a good example where Muslims, Buddhists and Hindus live peacefully.

PO: I personally think that in this scenario, socialism could be even more strong amongst the Iranians. We can look at the Turkey's 1960 Coup which almost half of the officers that executed the coup had socialist (left wing) views. I think in this timeline a group of leftist officers could overthrow the Shah even before the 1979.
