Australia would have been very happy to not have to share New Guinea with the Germans. Queensland claimed all of non-Dutch New Guinea even while the Germans were getting established.

At the time, the British were horsetrading pacfic islands for bits of Africa around the Volta River.

I think the British ceding The Northern Territories of the Gold Coast could work finely.

If the Germans demand more, the Volta Triangle would also make quite a bit of sense.

Maybe the Gilbert and Phoenix islands could sweeten the pot little bit more.

  • I think Germany would view a trade for Northern Nigeria as fair. Or the eastern half of Nigeria.
  • Or part British East Africa would look good.
  • And strangely enough since SWA was prestige colony, something that attached to it. Maybe Botswana.

This makes sense to me.

Possibly so. I'm surprised in these polls that more people haven't voted for them. They seem like not much of a sacrifice for Britain to make given their small size, population and remoteness from any Dominions. I suspect it's because not alot of people remember where they are or have heard of them. These days they are called Kiribati.

That would probably be more than Britain would be willing to cede, because Nigeria was a far more populous colony than New Guinea and thus a far bigger market and producer of exportable crops, at least in theory.

Or part British East Africa would look good.

I wonder which part, probably Somaliland, or Zanzibar or Uganda could be a bit more dispensable to Britain than Kenya. These were also more populous than New Guinea and thus probably considered more valuable than it.

Even though so much of it is Kalahari desert, I think Britain's answer to a request for Botswana would be a flat "no". Britain will not want to give the Germans territorial contiguity with either the independent Boer Republics or the concentrations of Boers within South Africa once the Boer War is over.

Also, since a motive for gaining New Guinea is to butter up the Australian colonies/dominions, I don't think that is consistent with a policy that likely angers the Cape Colony government or Union of South Africa government, or Mr. Rhodes.

Northern Nigeria was merged into Southern Nigeria because Northern Nigeria was losing money. There is some opportunity here.

The Germans like areas suitable for European habitation, so Uganda might go over well.
