What areas could have remained a part of a colonial empire into the 21st century ?

My question is what small odds and ends might have remained a colony of the mother country if things had gone better .Can be either large such as Algeria ,or small like the Fiji islands .
Basically what minor PODs would it take for European powers to end the Imperial age with more of their colonies still a part of their nation similar to what France has done today with what they have left of their old empire .

Places like Malta and Singapore for Britain, and I've also seen a thread about Newfoundland joining the UK but that's maybe unlikely. France isn't going to hold on to somewhere as large and hostile as Algeria. With stronger UN backing, Portugal can retain its territories in India, at least the city of Goa.

With a different fall of the Soviet Union Georgia, Ukraine & various of the 'Stans may remain part of the Russian Empire.

Then there's the Chinese Empire which still controls Tibet.

What about what France and the UK held on continental south America ?How difficult would it have been for them to hold onto that .

France does hold on to a sizable piece of continental South America.

If Italy stays out of WWII, there's a small but non-zero chance it keeps Libya to this day. Japanese Taiwan and Micronesia is another interesting idea that I don't think anyone has played with around here. Reagent has done some nice threads on Portuguese Africa staying around longer.

italy holding lybia isn't that small a chance. in 1939 italians made up 13% of the population, and the low total population made it pretty easy to increase that.
