Let me first off say that Im glad to be a part of AH.com after many months of trolling! And that Im not shure if this is the right place to be posting this but it can be moved cant it?
Now onto bussiness! I have recently finished The Grapple by Harry Turtledove. And I have to say the quality of his work was lacking throughout most of the novel. But I have some hope for In at Death. But again I digress, to the point. What about Europe? I understand that Mr.Turtledove has centered his books on the North American continent, which makes sense no doubt about it.
But I would have liked to hear more about what was happening on the European continent. I heard that Germany captured Verdun in the Great War. And that they were pushing British forces back through Holland, but other than that I really dont hear as much as I would like too.
So, since Mr.Turtledove has declined to feed my hungry imagination, Ive taken it into my own hands. And I emplore you to write your own peice, detailing some event that has taken place in the First Great War or the Second from a veiw point of a European character. Have Fun!
1944 - Holland
In the turret of his barrel, the same machine that an Englishman would call a tank, Colonel Erwin Rommel could direct the battle of Eindhoven from the frontlines. He would never have been able to direct an encounter from a secured headquarters, it was just too boring.
As his barrels moved through Eindhoven’s industrial district the Tommies crawled from the rubble to meet his superior force.
“Tommy barrels, dead ahead.” He spoke into his radio handset that addressed every infantryman and barrel under his command.
From inside the barrel his gunner replied, “Roger that. I’ve got one in my sights.”
“Fire at will,” before he even finished his sentence the barrel rocked with artificial thunder. Down the street one of the British machines exploded and began to burn.
The other barrels in his personal platoon began to open fire on the enemy. As three more exploded and began to burn the remaining handful fled.
Again Rommel addressed his forces, “Move forward. We have the Tommies on the run! Let’s drive them out of Holland once and for all!”
The massive metal hulks around him began to rumble forward, and infantry appeared from ruined buildings and cover to advance. Rommel smiled; the German Empire would regain its lost glory. England and France would pay for their invasion and for insulting the Kaiser.
