Hussein, the Hashemite Sharif of Mecca, tried to claim the title for himself, but was ignored.

The Nizam of Hyderabad had unusuccessful hopes of recognition as caliph, too.

A local non-Arab, non-radical leader of a Muslim nation declaring himself Caliph and suddenly drawing the ire of Islamists and jihadists everywhere (and the West, alike) would make for an interesting FH. Could be Turkey.
