Exactly what it says on the tin, Fascist Italy decides not to enter the war in 1940. I realize that there may be plausibility problems with that, given Mussolini's personality etc, but for the sake of argument assume Mussolini decided against entering the wider war. To my understanding, such a decision would eliminate the African theater, and for obvious reasons there is probably not going to be an Allied invasion of Italy if Italy is not involved in the war. So presuming we don't see significant butterflies like Japan somehow avoiding going to war with the United States, what do the Western Allies do? Where do the European front American soldiers get their experience? Given the strategic difficulty of invading France between 1942 and 1943 as explored in another thread what options do the Western Allies have?
