West Wing - Gay Character?

Something just struck me. Why is that the only portrayal of a gay man in the West Wing was a Republican? For a liberal fantasy portrayal of the Clinton Administration, I find it curious that there wasn't a single Democratic character who was gay. Wouldn't even have had to be a main cast member, but just seems a big omission.

Yeah, but that's stereotypical. Making the gay character a Repub is a bit different, a bit edgier. And, in a lot of cases, fairly true to life; a lot of gays from out West are in the upper income brackets, and well...folks tend to side with whoever protects their monetary interests.

Margaret was pregnant, but fans believed she was gay and I think the producers caught on and played around a little with the idea (there was a scene somewhere with Josh asking "Isn't she...?" when he noticed her pregnancy).

Santos' personal secretary, Ronna Beckman, and her "friend," were revealed to be lovers a couple weeks before the 2006 election. This was unknown Josh who had been working with the two for almost a year.

The episode Access features a gay man ("Jack Sosa") working for C.J. as one of the Assistant Press Secretaries. He was only seen one other time (more than most of her staff), but he noted the lack of "gay issues" in that episode, and was how he got the job.

Two Democratic Congressmen, Benoit and Diane Frost, were mentioned. That means they had at least three openly gay members of Congress in the early half of the 2000s decade. In OTL, during that time, we also had three openly gay Congressmen (Democrats Barney Frank and Tammy Baldwin, and Republican Jim Kolbe). So it mirrors real-life quite well.
