West and East Austria

It appears that Austria was divided temporarily into four zones of occupation after World War II, just like Germany. Vienna was broken into four zones, just like Berlin.

What would have happened if Austria went the way of Germany with the Soviet zone becoming a separate state (with Vienna having an exclave of whichever state didn't surround it, like Berlin)?

Look at these links:

If the Soviet zone was too small to survive independently, maybe it could be tacked onto some other country for better Soviet administration.

IIRC it was given up in part because it wasn't considered as important as keeping the Germans down and that along with Switzerland it was more useful as block on NATO movements between northern and southern Europe. If the Soviets continue to sit in their zone then the Allies will theirs making movement between Italy and Germany that much easier.

A neutral Austria was more advantageous to the Soviets than a divided one, which could lead to a continuous band of NATO territory stretching from West Germany to West Austria to Italy.

Is there is a chance that East/West Austria get rolled up into East/West Germany?

Unlikely. Will not happen in the East for the obvious reason that the two areas are geographically disconnected. In the West, post-war policy with Germany was still, for a while, "let's keep those Germans down", so NATO wouldn't approve. It could only happen, in my opinion, if the split happened and then the Soviets became very threatening, very fast, to the point where NATO does an about-face and now wants to strengthen Germany against the Soviets. Even then, however, it's a concern that annexing West Austria into the FRG would mean the remaining Austria now has unquestionable legitimacy as the sole Austrian state and might get increased support from anti-pan-Germanist Austrians in West Austria.
