Were the Opium Wars Inevitable?

So here's a thought -- would it have helped had the British East India Company not lost its legal monopoly on selling opium in 1833? Because AIR, it was really after this that the narcotic really started becoming prevalent, escalating the drug problem to the point that the Qing government felt it had to take "drastic" measures; ironically, had the British Parliament been more partial to the corporate favoritism, the Qing may well have left the problem alone for the time being, giving them more time to modernize should a later conflict with a western power break out.

Here's a thought:
Louis XVI actually fully support Pigneau de Béhaine in his Gia Long expedition
The Gia Long Emperor of Vietnam, helped by a big French expeditionary force, reclaims his throne and then some by grabbing stuff in China thanks to his European trained army
China, a bit miffed at having been beaten by a small vassal becomes interested in new military techniques

Or, one of the many revolts of the XIXth century actually succeeds and housts the Qing out. The new dynasty, less attached to pure, complete tradition, takes an interest in things foreign
