Well, I'm back! I'm sorry I haven't updated my current Wellstone TL for a while, I just haven't had the time.

Anyhow, I just had some other ideas about this, and I was thinking of rebooting this. Therefore, I present the public with three options on a Wellstone TL:

1. Wellstone 2000 - Very self-explanatory. In the biggest election upset since 1948, Paul Wellstone challenges Vice President Al Gore in the Democratic primaries in 2000, narrowly wins, and goes on to very narrowly defeat Bush in November 2000. The least plausible of the three, but IMO the most interesting since it would have 9/11 be dealt with by President Wellstone.;)

2. Wellstone 2004 - Wellstone doesn't die in a plane accident in October 2002, and a few weeks later, is re-elected to a third term in the Senate. In 2004, Senator Wellstone runs for the presidency, narrowly beats Kerry and Edwards (with the backing of Howard DEAAAN!) for the Democratic nomination, and beats President Bush in an upset. The part about Wellstone running is plausible, but not exactly winning the primaries and then the general.

3. Wellstone 2008 - Basically a continuation of my current TL - Wellstone Lives, Dean/Wellstone nominated and loses to Bush/Cheney, Cheney becomes POTUS when Bush is assassinated, and Wellstone is elected POTUS in 2008. Not exactly plausible.

So as you can see, none of these are very plausible, but hey, what's the fun in writing an AH TL if you aren't challenging plausibility?:D

Also, just a head's up - I would make these as detailed as I possibly can, since I have only twelve years or less to work with (depending on whether Wellstone '00, '04, or '08 wins). The '00 and '04 scenarios will run until 2013, and the '08 scenario will run until 2017.

I'd say Wellstone '08, except I see no reason to assassinate Bush. Just have Wellstone outmaneuver that rookie from Illinois in the primaries.

On the other hand, I think Bush being assassinated in '05 is interesting. Who does Cheney put in as his VP? How does he handle Katrina? What happens with Georgia?

However, I sorta want to see Wellstone not become President - instead, keep him a prominent Senator, and look at political history from there.

Wellstone 2000

And here's my idea of how he'll deal with 9/11:

August 6, 2001: President Wellstone receives the Presidential Daily Briefing at the Summer White House on Lake Superior. The briefing flatly declares that Al-Qaeda is planning to hijack planes and pull off some spectacular attacks. He reads the memo, mulls over it for a few minutes and discusses the contents with Joseph Clark (?), the Terrorism Task Force Coordinator held over from Clinton. Finally Wellstone says, "If I were Bin Laden and wanted to hijack planes and pull off some spectacular attacks, I'd hijack passenger jets and fly them into buildings."

September 11, 2001: Nineteen would-be hijackers are arrested in the morning at Logan, Newark and Dulles International Airports. Five others are arrested in the afternoon at Dallas - Fort Worth International Jetport.

December 23, 2001: Osama Bin Laden is captured by US / UK / EU forces operating under the UN flag. Mission accomplished, the troops depart for home. :D
