Weekly Flag Challenge: Discussion & Entries

I've just seen the above - I'll think of a new challenge by tomorrow evening hopefully... I know I had a few ideas some weeks ago but what with one thing and another my mind's gone blank tonight!

Even my suggestion list is bare at the moment.
I think Petike left one on the previous page.
And we can always revisit past ones.

A suggestion, if you would: Military Flags. Something like standard/flag of a regiment/division, Naval Ensign or flag of a branch of the Armed force.

Thank you to all those who suggested ideas for the challenge. I've decided to go with something which allows lots of creative freedom:
Flag Challenge № 222: Atlantis

Atlantis ... island of myth and legend. Your challenge is to design a flag for this fabled land.
You may use any Atlantis you want, from the original Greek stories to modern science fiction versions, or make up your own back-story.
(If you use one from a lesser-known story, a link to that story would be appreciated, just for interest, but is not mandatory.)

Submissions Open: now
Submissions Close: 25th April 2020 at 22:00 GMT (23:00 UK Summer time / midnight Central European Summer time / 18:00 USA Eastern Daylight time / 15:00 USA Pacific Daylight time / 08:00 26th April Australian Eastern time)
Voting Opens: the next day, 26th April
Voting Closes: 4 days later

Note on numbering: this challenge is № 222 even though it follows what was numbered as 220; challenges 211-221 were unfortunately mis-numbered as 210-220.

A reminder of the rules:
3.) Entry submission

Entrants submit designs in the “Discussion & Entries” thread. Restrictions on entries:
  • You MUST upload the image as an attachment on this site, not hosted on another site.
  • You CANNOT enter the round if you won the previous round, or if you are banned from the Weekly Flag Challenge.
  • You CANNOT enter more than one flag unless the challenge specifically asks for multiple flags.
  • You CANNOT enter anything other than flags and explanations. For example, you cannot add a supplementary map.
  • You can change your entry as many times as you want before the closing date. The most recent design posted by a entrant will be considered their entry.
  • Size limits:
    • For an image in a single-flag entry, the shortest side must be 600 pixels or less, and the longest side must be 1200 pixels or less.
I hope you enjoy this round... and good luck!

The Grand Principality of the Atlantides (O Grão Principado das Atlantidas)

The Atlantides is the great archipelago that sprawls across the triple junction between the North American, African, and Eurasian tectonic plates, and named for the belief that its many islands are the remnants of Atlantis. Despite brief colonies by the Phoenicians/Carthaginians (primarily Tyrax) and Romans (Tyrrhenium) lasting colonisation was only achieved by the Portuguese in 1500s, largely due to a hiatus of volcanic activity.
During the Liberal Wars the archipelago hosted the forces of Maria II and in reward was made into a royal principality under the crown of the Algarve and thereafter traditionally governed by the (newly created) Duke of Terceira Oriental.
Following the creation of the Portuguese Republic the islands were often the source of monarchial rebellion.
During WW2 the Atlantides would serve as a base for the Allies under lease by the dictatorship.
With the end of the dictatorship the archipelago gained its independence forming a constitutional monarchy. The administration debated becoming a full kingdom but with the newly appointed Grand Prince Duarte Pio, ironically of the Miguelist Braganza line, also claiming the crown of Portugal it was deemed too politically insensitive.

The flag of the Principality is a simple blue white echo of the Portuguese flag bearing the small Princely Arms. Said Arms were adapted from the Portuguese Arms with castles removed and the blue quinas turned green. There are 8 in 3 rows - 3 3 2 - said to reflect the 3 main divisions and subdivisions of the archipelago: Terceira Oriental, Terceira Norte, and Terceira do Sul.

[NOTE
Rather than go with a full Atlantis I have instead expanded greatly upon the Azores and mercilessly murdered butterflies (except for the interesting native species).]

Confederation of Atlantis
The unification of Atlantis in 1871 was the culmination of many dreams over the 2000 years since the collapse of the Ancient Atlantian Empire following an immense seismic sea wave (believed to have been caused by the eruption of the volcano internationally known as Cumbre Vieja in the Canary Islands).

The flag of Atlantis features a gold sun with 10 stripes for each of the traditional Atlantian kingdoms, which are said to have been founded by sons of Posiedon.

I'm still not quite happy with the sun, but I don't think I'm going to get anything I like better before the deadline.

I like the sun, it looks a bit like a sea urchin, and the concept of each tribe/citizen acting independently but still serving and protecting the whole would make a nice political metaphor at any rate, depending on the structure of the new state. The fact that OG Atlantis was characterized by concentric rings could also make the radiating design a more egalitarian symbol? I don't know. Nice work though.

Actually I had one other note: what if you changed the main color of the flag from blue to something like a burgundy? It seems counterintuitive I know, but hear me out:
  • Given the research on color perception among the Classical Greeks, using burgundy as a "historic Atlantean color" could be a neat reference to Homer's "wine-dark sea" line, and could simultaneously be their equivalent of Tyrian purple given the historical power of the old Atlantean Empire (and the fact the color was made from sea snails)
  • Second (and this is a deep cut), "The Scarlet Empire" is a dystopian novel about a socialist Atlantis published/set in 1906, so given the year the Confederation was founded it would be a somewhat amusing topical reference.
Feel free to use or discard any of these suggestions, they just popped into my head and I thought I'd share.

These are some nice ideas, but I'm not sure which I'd go with until I pin the history down a bit more than "actual ancient Atlantis was an island west of the Canaries about the size of Italy, dominated the Atlantic Ocean coast from Cape Finisterre to Cape Juby before being destroyed by a mega-tsunami and breaking up into city-states, [rest of history], reunified at the same time as Germany and Italy, currently disputes ownership of the Canaries and Madeira".

The base concept for the sun was the Ancient Macedonian Vergina Sun with 10 major rays following the ten ancient kingdoms of Atlantis.
As that is more of a Macedonian symbol, I'm unsure what I'd use, except maybe a large Alpha, similar to how Sparta and Laconia use a large Lambda.

I like the sun as a symbol, the sea urchin thing was just a coincidental double meaning to my mind. Either way an Atlantis that goes the way of Germany/Italy would make a pretty interesting TL.

Perhaps reduce the number of rays?
Or go with a sun of rings:
What about hybridizing the sun designs? Put a blue dot in the center of this sun to symbolize the traditional five rings of ancient Atlantis and make the rays longer like the original design for the ten tribes.
I will go with a variation of this, as I've read that ancient Atlantis has three circular canals.

Confederation of Atlantis

It was in August 1871 that a united Atlantis could be said to exist once more. In the face of continued encroachment by Britain, France, Spain, and Portugal, the archons and autocrats of the island of Atlantis, from the mountains of the north to the plains of the south, yielded to Atlantian nationalism to form the Confederation of Atlantis - a union of brother-kingdoms once more ruled from the ancient city of Poseidonis in shadow of the Trident Mountains. It had been nearly 2500 years since a mostly-unified Atlantis was ruled from Poseidonis, when the Ancient Atlantian Empire, consisting of ten kingdoms said to be founded by sons of Poseidon, had imposed its will over the Atlantic coasts of Iberia and North Africa until it was destroyed circa 600 BCE by a seismic sea wave caused by the eruption of the volcano internationally known as Cumbre Vieja in the Canary Islands.

The flag design reflects more on the ancient history of Atlantis than the modern state, with ten stripes and a sun with ten rays for the ten ancient kingdoms, and three blue circles within the sun for the three canals which ringed the ancient and modern capital city of Poseidonis.
