Weekly Flag Challenge: Discussion & Entries

Japan Controlled Luzon (North): Luzon Autonomous Territory

US Controlled Visayas and Mindanoa (South): Commonwealth of the Southern Philippine Islands

If you've got any suggestions let me know. Here are my early designs: http://www.flickr.com/photos/22858803@N02/sets/72157623544253871/detail/
I usually hesitate to comment becuase I don't want to be accused of influencing the coming votes against a competitor... but you asked!;)

I really like the LAT flag, it has a mid-century modernism that seems appropriate. Same as I was going for with my cherry-blossom flag above.

I'm not so sure about the CSPI flag - the stars would look more balanced at top and bottom rather than mid and bottom you have. I also liked the ?sun? symbol on some of your drafts over the US Seal - seems a little bit much to reference the USA that directly.

Though challenge, indeed, haha :D I didn't realize that before I chose it.

Mine is a future split and also is my country: Italy.

Northern Italy secedes under the pressure of Northern League Party, and adopts a blue-green-white flag (colours of the padanian fields, Po river and alpine snowy mountains) charged by the "Sun of the Alps", symbol of the Padania (which is actually featured on the logo of the Northern League Party, which invented the ridicoulous term of Padania).

Southern Italy transforms itself into a monarchy, offers the throne to the Savoy family, that accepts, and keeps the tricolour, charged with the new royal coat of arms (quartered: 1st Rome, 2nd Naples, 3rd Sardinia and 4th Sicily, Savoy overall, yes I know those are civic coat of arms, forgive me I was lazy)

(God forbid this actually happens!):p

The colonies of British Somaliland and Italian Somaliland become independent as separate countries rather than uniting as OTL. West Somalia, officially the State of Somaliland gained its independence from Britain in 1964, while East Somalia, officially the Somali Republic became independent from Italy in 1955. There are pan-Somali movements in both countries, although they remained divided over the extent of a possibe united Somalia, moderates just want the unification of East and West Somalia while radicals want the inclusion Djibouti, Ogaden and northwest Kenya, however both use a white star on blue as a pan-Somali symbol.

Thanks for the comment. Glad you like the 1st flag. :) I was pretty stuck with the 2nd and kinda rushed it. Maybe I'll sneak a different design in... lol

For reasons I'll leave for the reader to decide, the Portuguese more heavily colonize in India and the subcontinent is eventually divided between the Portuguese in the South and the British in the North. Upon independence, OTL India is divided largely into two states:
The Union of India or Hindustan (British, upper flag)
and
The Deccan States*(Portuguese, lower flag)

*- I can't think of any other name other than South India to represent all of Southern India.

Well, I guess I'm too late, but I post my entries any ways...

United Siberian Socialist Republic

In a world where the Communist Movement in the Russian Empire was not as popular, and the short Civil War much bloodier, the Soviets ended up having to split Russia, and create a USSR in Siberia, with the help of the independent Siberia movement.

Republic of Russia

With the Russian Empire able to still hold on, it moved to a parliament system in the 1940s. The Tzars are still around just not much of a political figure any more (similar to the United Kingdom).

Also, whats the next Challenge going to be?

Also, whats the next Challenge going to be?

The challenge for a certain week is decided by the winner of the previous challenge, so we will only know once the voting is finished and he/she makes a choice. Anyone's free to post suggestions on this thread, which are to be done in bold, for convenience.

For what its worth, if you made it on time i totatly would have voted for you. Great flags!

This contest is pretty tough... I know so little about the topic. I hope I didn't misunderstand the timeline.

The Democratic Kingdom of Bohemia.
Bohemia did not go into disarray in 1923 when the 16 year old king died due to a genetic disorder even though there were no more heirs left to the throne. The Aristocracy already controlled most of the nation through the Council of Advisors. The Advisors held a constitutional convention in which they pushed for preservation of their royal titles and positions while allowing the citizens to elect a King. In 1926, as the Kingdom's first election campaigns were taking place a naive young dreamy aristocrat who had much sympathy for the people created this new flag design. "The wings of the people beat to their will." Their will being their choice of King.

No, I deliberately had it vague enough to allow a large variety of flags from Empire to Federal State of the Republic ;).
Tbh I'm a little stuck on what I'm going to do :D

Don't worry Professor, honestly I was going to post the winning entry yesterday but I ended up forgetting! Sorry about that.

Wow! Though new challenge... *runs reading about Přemyslid dynasty*

I like the KISS principle, so here's my flag for the Bohemian Republic, originally adopted by the Prague Convention in 1805:

I've finally decided on what I'm posting!

In the aftermath of the Great European War (aka the Polish Succession) in the early 1800s the son of Wenceslas IX was banished from the Bohemian Lands and Duke Otto of Bavaria accepted the Crowns of Bohemia and Carantania as Ottokar VI & II, 1st of the House of Sanneck. His badge of a golden trefoil on a blue lozenge replaced the Přemysl arms over the 4 red and 3 white bars.

Following the Post World War dissolution of the Holy/German Roman Empire, Bavaria was raised to a Kingdom equal to that of the other 2. And the flag simplified.

The flag of the United Kingdoms of Bavaria, Bohemia, & Carantania, was recognised as composing:

a) A red-white-red tricolour in honour of the seat of Parliament at Vienna

b) A band of 3 white and 2 red divided in 2 by the lozenge to represent the 10 regions - Upper Bavaria, Lower Bavaria, Salzburg, Ceska (or Bohemia Proper), Moravia, Silesia, Austria, Styria, Carinthia, and Carniola.

c) a fimbriated blue lozenge with a golden trefoil to represent the House of Sanneck; the trefoil further symbolises the 3 Crowns, and Bohemia's historical status as the 3rd Kingdom in the HRE (after Burgundy and Germany).

I hope I'm not out of time.
I had fun doing the coat of arms for the last challenge so I decided to try once more.
I designed a flag that I imagine would be some sort of Royal Standard for the Bohemian Kingdom.
It has 5 stripes representing the number of provinces composing the Kingdom (Bohemia, Moravia, Austria, Carinthia and Carniola) in the national colours and is defaced with the coat of arms also representing all of the provinces with the coat of arms of the Přemyslid reigning dynasty superimposed.
(couldn't fit Styria in the blazon, I suppose it is merged with either Carinthia or Carniola haha, and also I'm not so sure about the quarter representing Austria-Carinthia but oh well I ran out of patience marshalling plus I'm not that good at it)

I just realized that the challenge requested the OUSTING of the Přemyslid dynasty. I must read the guidelines more carefully next time:(
I'll try to edit my entry tomorrow before the contest ends.
