Weekly Flag Challenge: Discussion & Entries

so for the latest challenge Marc can it be a country that has existed but has a different form of government than otl

nope. It must be the actual one. Too easy to make it monarchist. I feel cruel.

how would it make it easier?....as most otl nations established icons and symbology early on, wouldnt those same ideas still stick around, making it actually harder without a different form of government, to come up with a different idea to otl?

I don't see how making the country a monarchy would necessarily make it easier.

Still, it's your decision, boss.

Thought you had hit a blank and were trying to convert one particular country to a monarchy to be able to use some variant of the pre-existing one. (as in put a crown on the national COA, slap it on a plain field and call it the Royal ensign).

So as I said: being cruel, mwa-ha-ha and so on....

no, thatd be dumb lol...if they did have a form of government than the symbology would be alot different, and sticking just a crown atop a otl one for nay nation is stupid as it doenst reflect the change at all...and i wasnt talking just about monarhcies, but other types of government

So we're redesigning flags for OTL not an ATL?

That's my idea gone then

see it this way, the POD is that a country either decided to adopt different symbols or adopt some where they didn't *here*.

Mind you, if you guys feel its too much of a constraint, I'll amend the challenge.

kinda feels too limited tbh

I agree in that part of the fun of these CHallenges is imagining the country evolving in a different direction... the alternate history behind the flag, I mean. Could it be OTL countries, but in an ATL? I'm not particularly interested in doing a new flag for the governor-general of Canada, but it could be fun to do one for the governor-general of the Dominion of Bangladesh. For instance.

But it still rules out Pimlico?

Inspired by the movie "passport to pimlico" ? yes.

Just to explain why I put the limit to real life entity (even variants now): If people can put flags (as happened in past challenges) that represent entities from works of fictions, I feel that we end up comparing apples and oranges since if you're unfamiliar with the work, voters might have no idea if the flag make any sense in context. A flag might look weird but if for example it represent an alien race, it might perfectly be in keeping with their esthetic.

Even if people go for slightly more obscure real life entities, people on this site generaly know enough about history to gauge if it is in keeping with history in general if some background is given.

People may disagree but to me that make the entries easier to judge.

This is the weekly flag challenge, not the 3.5 century flag challenge.

actually its up to the author to decide the dates now, largly due to the fact some people in the past have had to extend the timeline or failed to actual post a challenge even after 2 weeks...so yea...the name doesnt mean alot now

But still, 347 years until this round ends? He better have meant the time 23:59. If so, a timezone is needed for clarification for international members. We do have a nice tradition of being lax about timeframes to allow some latecomers, but the timezones can make a big difference in people's understanding of the deadline.

yea its the time x3

given that they were part of the duchy they wouldve come under frances perview, so all theyd have is the tricolour :/

Good pont. But IIRC (1) the Duke came to them, so given the mid-20th political status of the Duchy, his seat would most likely have become Pimlico and (2) the treaty/grant far predated the introduction of the tricolour. :)

true but i cant remebr if he was a actual descendent or just a conman with a good forgery (aint seen the movie in years)...plus burgundy itself was a fief of france even when the dukes ruled....it might go like andorra, where the duke rules, but rules in the name of france (like the president is also the prince of andorra so its independent, but under their co sovereingty)
