Weekly Flag Challenge: Discussion & Entries

After seeing some of the things I'm up against, I figured I'd better make my entry a bit fancier. The expanded entry is in my first post above.

for those of us whose ideograms reading is a bit rusty, you might want to include a translation key cause I'm curious about who's member state each flag represent. (I can guess korea and cambodia but, you know....)

Good call; I'll put a list in the flavor text that has the countries in the order of their flags.

Here we go:

The Great Union of Asian Socialist Republics

Interesting that I made an Union of Asian Socialist Republics for the MotF :p

Bhutan, Burma, Cambodia, China, Guangdong Ports, Japan, Korea, Laos, Mongolia, Nepal, Palau, Philippines, Sikkim, Tibet, and Vietnam, in that order.

I'll probably be tinkering with mine right up to the due date.

He meant Cazari'ls flags, I think. Mine are much closer to OTL and aren't labeled in Chinese like his are. And they're just in alphabetical order in English.

Top to bottom, left to right: Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos. Far-left is China.

Well "technically" according to the Challenge only the larger flag can appear in the poll ;)

It was curiously coincidental :D
Hmmm, I could modify a version for your MotF entry if you'd like ;)

I am tempted to produce designs for my GUASR member states but I haven't got the minor republics nailed down yet

After the Second World War ended with Japan, Korea and China in states of civil war and unrest the nations seemed like they would never rise to global powers. However after the East Asian Uprisings ('67) that deposed the Communist Government of Korea, the new Emperor of China and the Military Dictator of Japan. This led to the creation of the '3 Republics' which formed a strong diplomatic friendship. In the 1980s this was expanded into the political and economic union known as the East Asian Republican Circle (EARC). This flag was then to be flown below the national flag of the constituent state as a promise of a republican union one day in the future.

In addition to the EARC there was also a military pact that was established, making the EARC one of the 3 dominant forces on the planet. This also found a problem to the Japanese not being able to declare war. A "Foreign Legion" was established, technically as a part of the Chinese Military but in actual fact was 89% Japanese soldiers and was run by Chinese citizens who were Japanese generals who moved to China. The flag of The Eastern Triple Alliance (ETA) is designated to fly instead of the EARC flag in times of war. It is often flown alone in foreign military bases owned by the EARC member nations.

The EARC flag is my entry to the Competition, and the others are ones to support it.

I interpreted the challenge as "Additional supplemental images are fine, but remember that it's mostly about the main flag, so make sure it takes up the majority of the space." So the entry can have extra stuff, but its only there to enhance the effect of the primary flag.

However, I may be misinterpreting fbwr's intent.

Flag Challenge rules say that only one flag is entered in the poll, unless the weekly challenge asks for multiple entries.

fbwr's challenge seems to allow multiple entries, but it's not too clear so I suggest you PM him/her.

Good idea; I PMed them for clarification.

the only problem with this flag i see is the use of "star of david" type stars...5 points would make more sense, as their socialist symbols

Yeah I know. Unfortunately I'm using Photoshop Elements and can't arrange a ring of objects, and the only image of 8 stars I could find had the sixpoints.

Think of it as the symbol of Asian Communism ;)

Why does the PRC flag has 3 stars (instead of the expected 4-5) ?

I'm glad you asked that.
In this instance the People's Republic of China is essentially a troika of "Regions" - Inner Mongolia, East Han, and West Han. Think an initial alliance of 3 communist warlords. So rather than representing the peoples of PRC the stars represent the regions.
In terms of territory it covers OTL PR China north of the Huai River from Gansu in the west to Jiangzi in the east.
