Weekly Flag Challenge: Discussion & Entries

Holy Roman Empire of Han People

Holy Roman Empire of Han People.

This shall be Imperial Banner of HRE(HP) a successor state, third Rome, defender of faith in fare East.

Banner is made of four same size cantons with two Chinese ancient seal script drownings duplicated in horizontal line. Red one represents Chinese script of IHTIS abbreviation witch became due to (fare more than in West) Iconoclasm movement official sight of Christianity. Yellow drowning on red background is simply 'Roman Empire' in seal script.

Imperial Banner is one of the most notable influence of Byzantium culture in HRE(HP). Chinese Emperors wanted to legitimise their power as successors of Rome so they change their traditional emblems and made them similar to those used in ancient times.

Jōin to Yamato no hitobito

After the Revolutionary war of 558-562 against the Imperialists of the continent, the Romano-Nipponese elected to establish a New Republic, based on the ideals of their ancestral nations of both Rome and Wa, culminating in the formation of the Republic of Yamato, extending from the isle of Sapporo to the straits of Napoles (otl - Ryukyu islands) and, on the 17th of March, 575, the new senate approved the national ensign, designated the JoHiToYa flag.

  • Republic of Yamato:
- Prime Consul: Numeria Kahaya
- Goverment : Unitary Republic
- Formation: 12th of March, 562 - New Imperial Calender

  • Flag of JoHiToYa : The Flag of JoHiToYa was accepted by popular approval by over 90% of the electorate, and utilises the old colours of the original Roman republic, gold emblossed on deep red, with roman numerals (the accepted numerical system of the republic) bearing the numbers 5·60·2, representing the year 562 as both the culmination of their war for independece, and the establishment of the first elected senate. Above the numerical sequence a golden representation of the weeping cheey bloosom flower , the emblem of the city capital of Kyoto-Roma (gold for Roma, the flower for Kyoto), and at its center a golden sun disc (represening the rising sun and nipponese tradition) bearing the letters in Hiragana (the national launguge) , the characters representing the 4 initals of the countries motto: Jōin to Yamato no hitobito (Latin: Seantus Populusque Yamato ; English: The Senate and People of Yamato), and the entire flag bordered by 3 golden lines, representing the union of the the 3 factions of the previous rebellion into one unified country. All these symbols joined together to represent the historic cultural and ancestral heritage of both ethnicities into a single new people and nation.

remember...9 hours left guys to get in your entries (midnight gmt)

wont be accepting or including anymore after that in the poll, but looks like we got some dam good ones

Thanks guys.
I wasn't entirely happy with my first entry.
The second is sort of a Mongolian-Korean hybrid despite being based on the Long Chinese symbol for dragon :D

your first lacked what the second has...didnt feel...real...but the second definatly hits the mark dude

Would it be worth setting an upper width limit on flags?

This week especially I've noticed a tendency for flags to be at least 1000px wide and thus requiring a bit of scrolling to see them fully.

Perhaps we can allow free size on entries but when polling all the flags are roughly the same size to avoid any standing out for being a different size to the rest?

Getting ready for jkarr's return, here's some previous suggestions for challenges.

  • 1 _ Benkarnell _ A flag used by fans of a sports team in a fictional or alt-historical country
  • 2 _ Benkarnell _ A flag for a guerrilla movement that adheres to a fictional, alt-historical, or dead ideology
  • 3 _ Benkarnell _ A personal standard for a head-of-state possessing an obsolete or unusual title - a modern archon, First Consul, high king, Big Brother, etc. - of any country
  • 4 _ Benkarnell _ A new or alternate flag for any place that is currently uninhabited, whether it has a flag in OTL or not
  • 5 _ catboy637 _ A United Republic of Germany before 1980.
  • 6 _ dilbert719 _ Create a flag for an independent nation of Alsace-Lorraine
  • 7 _ fabrondi _ Flag of Burgundy
  • 8 _ fabrondi _ Flag of a Brazil being colonized by Dutch
  • 9 _ kirrix _ If you look at world and the current astronomical amount of resources it would take to make permanent homes elsewhere in the Solar System, chances are you'll realize that space colonization will likely begin with corporations attempting to get at mineral rich asteroids. The challenge would be to design the flags of the colonial companies that are set up to do so, as well as a brief blurb describing the company (ie. country/countries of origin, if they have sponsorship of a government, etc.).
  • 10 _ Nymain1 _ Republican flags that don't include banded stripes of colour (e.g. Tricolours, Bicolours etc)
  • 11 _ OAM47 _ Flag of a North American Union that also has UK and Ireland as equaly important areas.
  • 13 _ The Professor _ NonOrange Netherlands
  • 14 _ The Professor _ Danish North Germany
  • 17 _ The Professor _ Surviving Aquitaine/Gascony
  • 22 _ The Professor _ Islandia has undergone revolution: design its successor's flag
  • 23 _ The Professor _ Design a flag for one of the fictional countries in Yes Minister

  • 26 _ The Professor _ Political Parties of Alternate Countries
  • 34 _ The Professor _ The Literal Micronations: design a flag for the Little Folk (Smurfs, Gnomes, whatever) of a country
  • 35 _ Transparent Blue _ Choose any national-flag that you dislike and design a better one.
  • 36 _ Transparent Blue _ Improve a Soviet-Socialistrepublic flag.
  • 37 _ Transparent Blue _ Improve a United-States of America State flag.
  • 38 _ Transparent Blue _ A colony on The Moon.
  • 39 _ Transparent Blue _ A colony on Mars.
  • 41 _ Transparent Blue _ A colony that is under-water.
  • 42 _ Transparent Blue _ Design a flag for a location that does not have one.
  • 43 _ Transparent Blue _ A future China.
  • 44 _ Transparent Blue _ A united Korea.
  • 46 _ Transparent Blue _ A non-boring flag of Libya.
  • 47 _ Transparent Blue _ A communist Chinese flag that actually looks Chinese.
  • 48 _ Transparent Blue _ The 'Pacific Union'.
  • 50 _ Trovador _ The Technocratic Union: create a flag for a nation that sucessfully becomes a Technocracy and a Major Power - it can be in any nation and with any definition of "technocracy".
  • 51 _ Trovador _ Alternate national animal: change the national animal of a country and make a flag of such nation with the alternate animal on it - for example, a Germany with a Bear rather than an Eagle, or a Scotland with a Wyvern rather than a Lion.
  • 52 _ Trovador _ The Filibuster Republic: the XIX century was full of ambitious adventurers, personal armies and unstable non-civilized regions. The result of these things was some very short-lived and unusual nations, such as the Republic of Sonora, the Republic of Acre and the Kingdom of Sarawak. Create a flag for a (OTL or ATL) "Filibuster" state that manages to survive - it doesn't have to survive until present day, but must exist for over 30 years.

  • 56 _ Lord Grattan _ The Hanseatic League grows into a more cohesive and centralized union, design a flag for it.
  • 57 _ Lord Grattan _ Design a flag by twice clicking "random article" in the Navigation Box on Wikipedia and then combining the elements (colors & symbols) of the two most closely related (local, regional, subnational or national) flags.

NB I've removed suggestions already covered but let me know if I've missed any.
