The Hanseatic Federation of Sovereign Cities

750px-Flag_of_the_Second_Spanish_Republic_(plain).png

Evolving from the trade organization known as the Hanseatic League, the Hanseatic Federation of Sovereign Cities, or simply "the Hansa", was first of many of Mercantilist Republics. Mercantilism, as a political ideology as opposed to the economic theory, was developed in the 16th Century. The 14th Century onset of the Black Plague in its second and more deadly form had led to the dissolution of several growing states, and economic and political instability was rife. As the disease slowed and eventually vanished, economic theorists proposed that the best way for a nation to succeed in the now very much barren and unstable world was to always export over import, thus maintaining enough wealth to support and defend itself. Nations rushed to gobble up collapsed empires, and the tripartite discovery of Thule*, Hybrasil**, and Al-adn*** only spurred this rush for land and resources further. It was during the plague that the notion of the divine right of kings was questioned; were king and peasant not struck down alike? And was it not the wealthy, both noble and common, who survived? While health and cleanliness was the true reasoning behind disease rates, it was cemented into the minds of Europeans that fortune and God favored the bold, the intuitive, those who made their own wealth. Further more, the loss of numerous noble houses and monopolies had opened up the market, allowing commoners the ability to gain massive wealth. With power being centered in fewer and fewer houses of aristocratic lineage, the notion of societal mobility became widespread. Thus came the next logical question: should those who have earned God's favor and political power through wealth not be those who rule? It was with this question that Mercantilism was formed. It would be the wealthiest families that would rule, creating a representative body in which a voice was given to each main family, similar to the Noble Republics of the past. Eventually, disputes over how many seats each family should be afforded was solved with the universal answer: money. In Mercantilist Republics, seats in legislature are literally purchased, usually with a certain maximum to prevent seats simply being bought up before others could.

The Hansa was the nation where this thought and eventually this form of government originated. It had quickly become one of the premier powers in Europe, and city after city joined in order to share in their wealth and growing resources, with Hansa colonies soon bringing in raw materials for sale. Eventually, they consolidated, becoming a proper state with a capital placed in Gotland. For a while, each city had its own representatives, and over time individual cities began to allow their seats to be purchased by wealthy families, until the procedure became formal in the early 1700s. However, despite the purchasing of seats, there is still a maximum number of seats per city but families may purchase seats in other cities. Today, the Hansa has been eclipsed in power by the United Oligarchies of Hybrasil, but remains a major power.

The flag bears the double-headed eagle of the Holy Roman Empire, representing its place as a hegemon of Europe; clutched in its claws are scales, representing the weighing of gold that symbolizes mercantilism. The three stars represent the three regions of the HFSC; North Germany, the Baltics (Swedish coast included), and Holland. The red and white come from the old penant used by Hansa ships, with a black stripe added both to place the three most used colors in member-city flags, and to represent the commoners, who, along side the nobles (white) ascend into wealth and power, represented by red, being the color of passion and sacrifice.

Free Trade Zone (former Kaliningrad exclave)
Cвободная экономическая зона

In TTL, the collapse of the Soviet Union was an all-around catastrophe. The August Coup of 1991 dragged the Russian SFSR into a bloody and devastating civil war. Although the Yeltsin faction ultimately emerged as a winner, the prolonged conflict brought along an utter economic collapse. Food scarcity and disease outbreaks rivaled those of the worst natural disasters. This meant that not only did the republics of the Soviet Union break away as soon as they possibly could, but same happened to a number of other territories that were simply desperate for survival.

One of those territories was the exclave of Kaliningrad. After its military bases were ruined in the civil war and the flow of money from the central government stopped, the local civilian government collapsed utterly. What rose up to fill the power vacuum was something else entirely. Today, political science mostly calls the final form of this governance "the closest thing to a functioning anarcho-capitalist society", although this classification has several prominent critics.

It is speculated that the unique blend of the old Soviet criminal culture and the new entrepreneurial culture that had formed shortly before the collapse made this unique type of society possible. The smuggling networks that were so formed had already been socially accepted as a way to provide people with consumer goods that were lacking in the Soviet economy. The criminal culture and the nearly ubiquitous availability of small arms, light military weapons and even armored vehicles meant that there was a swift consolidation of different groups of smugglers and entrepreneurs into a small number of roughly equally sized companies, each with private armed forces (or armed gangs, as some would say).

And so, with the local government unexpectedly gone, the military gutted and the Russian central government locked into a life-or-death struggle with the coup leaders far from the territory of Kaliningrad, the gangs suddenly found that they had become the ultimate authority in the new society of that tiny exclave. At first, both Poland and Lithuania tried to restore some semblance of order in the new smugglers haven right at their doorstep, but they soon found out that police and border guard are hopelessly outmatched against mechanized infantry. Begin faced with their own problems, the neighboring countries were then content to secure the borders and leave the situation to develop on its own.

A decade later, the new order had stabilized into what it is today. The territory is ruled by eight corporation-gangs or Houses (Дом) as they prefer to call themselves, with a byzantine system of core territories, areas of influence and neutral zones. There are no laws and nothing is illegal, which makes the exclave a paradise for all kinds of black market activities, including prostitution, drugs and weapons trade as well as gambling. This means that although the territory is officially an international pariah, a powerful demand for the services that would be illegal elsewhere has allowed it to survive and even thrive.

The only thing that is universally respected in the territory is the Auction. Held in the presence of the permanent representatives of all eight Houses in the neutral Auction House (former Köningsberg Cathedral), the Auction is the one single way of negotiating all deals and settling all disputes. The rules are simple: whoever bids more, wins. This includes any liberties, rights or even life.

The territory has no official name nor any official symbols. Outside the territory, it is mostly referred to as the "former Kaliningrad exclave of Russia" (or in Russia's case, without the "former"). The Houses never use the name of Kaliningrad, preferring to use a functional name of "Free Trade Zone". And although all Houses have symbols and signs of their own, the flag of the Auction House, which all Houses respect, has become something like an unofficial symbol for the Free Trade Zone as a whole.

The flag of the Auction House, originally used in a miniature version for signaling during the bidding process, consists of a golden field, symbolizing money and a black fimbriation dividing the field in two. In the upper half, there are crossed gavels, symbolizing a victorious bid and the lower half is empty, as the loser is left with nothing.

FLAG CHALLENGE #155: The Great -Ism

This challenge calls for TWO flags from each participant!

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to create the flags of two superpowers of opposing ideologies that are locked in a Cold War. Any and all ideologies are up for grabs, and "opposing ideologies" only has to mean they don't believe the same things (i.e. two socialist states that define socialism differently are valid).

ATL: Monarchism vs. Republicanism

In this ATL, the fights between kingdoms and republics go on for much longer than in OTL. Events such as the French Revolution are either postponed, never happen or simply don't have such a huge effect on history. This means that communism and capitalism are overshadowed and thus do not control politics in this ATL.

The 20th century is coming to an end. Soon, there will be a new century where new ideas and nations will begin to rise from old ones. Two superpowers have emerged that will compete to control this century and possibly the next ones to come.

Kingdom of Central Europe

Royaume d'Europe Centrale
Koninkrijk van Midden-Europa
j2ChNly.png

The KCE (commonly named 'Central Europe' or sometimes simply 'Europe') is a monarchist confederacy in Central Europe with the city of Brussels as its capital. Although there is no official language, the three most commonly spoken and written languages are English, French and Dutch.

The Central European military is the biggest and best trained on the planet and their economy is the second best in the world, although there is little to no political freedom in the country and quite a lot of people in the KCE have to deal with corrupt police and near constant discrimination, namely ethnic, religious, political and sexual minorities to name a few.

The KCE's flag uses the colours gold and purple, which are very commonly associated with monarchism, as well as a cross in the background which highlights the christian and conservative history of the continent. The gear in the center of the flag, as well as the crown, symbolize the ideology of the Central European government: the people are cogs in the machine that is the nation and the royal family are in the heart of the government.

The OTL equivalent of this nation would be a combination of elements from both the European Union and the Holy Roman Empire, all with heavy imperial undertones.

Canton Federal Republic
广东联邦共和国 - Guǎngdōng liánbāng gònghéguó
TOfVBSs.png

The CFR (Commonly named 'Canton' or 'South China') is a Democratic Federation in East Asia with the city of Guangzhou as it's capital, although the most commonly known cities are Hong Kong and Macau. The official language of the CFR is simplified Chinese, while Cantonese is the most commonly used language among its citizens.

Even though their military isn't quite as large as Central Europe's, Canton's economy and standard of living is among the highest, if not the highest, in the world. Compared to many other nations, the people of Canton experience relative liberty in terms of political freedom and freedom of expression. However, the country shows a quite apparent problem with crime as well as a large divide between the rich and the poor, resulting in large numbers of those living in poverty as well as several gated communities outside of the densely populated cities in the south.

The CFR's flag is in a tricolour pattern, a very common trait of republican nations, as well as the colours white and red. These colours have symbolism in China dating back several thousands of years, with red symbolising fortune and happiness and white in this case symbolising purity. The five pointed star is a classic symbol of liberty, although in this case it doesn't necessarily represent socialism or communism as these ideologies are not that well known in this timeline as in ours. The lotus is a very traditional symbol in china and has several meanings. The lotus is a commonly used Buddhist symbol, but this doesn't necessarily make it a religious symbol, as the CFR is more of a secular state. In this case, it is more of a national symbol representing Chinese culture and history as well as peace and purity.

The OTL equivalent of this nation is supposed to be a combination of the several Special Administrative Regions in The PRC into one nation spanning these regions, although the CFR is intended to be much more democratic than OTL China.

Monarchism & Republicanism

Holy European Empire
Heiliges Europäish Reich
United European Empire.png

While the Holy European Empire does not include all of Europe it is by far the most powerful country on the continent as it contains all of the former Holy Roman Empire, Hungary, Venice, Austrian Netherlands, and more. It was created when all of the Habsburgs Lands that were not already a part of the Holy Roman Empire were incorporated in the early 1900s.
The country has a strong monarchical tradition and is lead almost exclusively by the emperor and very small and select group of other nobles. While the lower class has very little power in their countries government, most are very content if not very pleased with their role as the country also has a very strong sense of duty, one of which is that it is the strong's duty to protect the weak. Because of this the country has an advanced social support system and any modification of thus system must have the personal approval of the emperor.

Democratic Federation of America
United American Democracy.png

Formed from the unification of the five major republics on the North American continent (Columbia, Louisiana, Texas, California, and Cascadia). as a defense to monarchist influence in the rest of the world, particularly in Europe. The transition into one country was relatively smooth as the four other republics traced their heritage back to the United States of Columbia, which allowed it to focus its attention on building its power and influence. All citizens of the federation have equal rights and the ability to vote on their leaders and policies. The citizens of the federation value their liberty and political voice above everything else, so much that they try to keep the government from impeding on that liberty at all costs. This has led the country to expect all its citizens to provide everything for themselves, and anyone who does not is viewed has have chosen not to.

Due to the lack of a third entrant, in conjunction with the American holiday forthcoming, I am electing to enact Rule 4 of the Weekly Flag Challenge and extend the submission window by another 7 days. Thus:

Hitler didn't like Esperantists, either. Some of them went to the camps, some fled. Some fled to the USSR.

Stalin liked them, for Stalin reasons. Maybe this could be a way to break down those pesky national identities in the oncoming world of global communism.

The Soviets came out of the war well, cooling their heels in Paris while the US fumbled in depression and civil disorder. Esperanto-speaking advocates of the Soviet way fanned across Europe.

The Universal Esperanto League (Universala Esperanto-Ligo) was billed as a true post-national assembly, a League of Nations speaking in one voice, but it was little more than a Soviet front.

Ironically the pockets of resistance scattered across the world also found a need for a common tongue - but not the hated 'International language'. In the mid-1950s radical followers of Sapirism-Whorfism created Loglan, the logical language. The Loglan League (Loglan Grugru) has had its share of internal strife, and many would say it lost its original sense of purpose with the so-called Lojban Reforms of the late 80s. Nevertheless it still stands strong today in the face of Soviet-Esperantist Internationalism.

Temporal Cold War of the American Union

The Temporal Cold War is one of the labels given to the crosstime conflict between the factions aiming to produce their version of the future American Union.
The 2 predominant factions are the (selfnamed) Alpha Faction and their opponents the Omegas.

The Alpha Faction
Government: Hierarchically Federal Presidential Republic. States make up Regions with a Senate headed by a Deputy President. Regional Senate&Congresses then elect the National Senate and Congress. There is a nationally elected President and, depending on temporal flux, either regionally elected coterminous DPs or DPs on the Presidential Ticket.
Citizenship: There are 3 classes of Citizen in this AU which determine job, medical, and voting rights. The top class Alphas are the only class able to elect the President. Citizenship tests to determine class occur at age 15 and every 10 years after.
Ideology: Libertarian Capitalism. Unregulated free market with a strong corporate element.

The Omega Faction
Government: Federated Presidential Republic. The National Senate and Congress have internally devolved Regional Sub-Senates led by an internally selected Premier or Speaker. The Presidency is the multi-member Executive Council whose newest member is nationally elected each year. Depending on temporal flux there are 7-12 Executive Councillors who serve 1 term each (ie a term of 7-12 years). Regionalism and multiple Councillors have enabled the growth of a multi-party system.
Ideology: Social Capitalism. Strongly regulated market with government funded health and social care programmes.

The Great Transhumanism Divide

By the end of the 21st century, the advancements in machine learning finally culminated in an event later dubbed "The Awakening". Self-aware, conscious artificial minds developed without warning and seemingly in an instant. Initially, there followed a short period of panic and destruction, as nations sought to undo what was feared to be the worst mistake of humanity.

But the doomsayers were proven wrong. The Minds, as they decided to call themselves had no ill intentions towards the humankind. On the contrary, when they were given a chance, they seemed to solve effortlessly all the major problems still plaguing humanity, from energy to resources to health.

A hundred years later, the world had reached what was seemingly a post-scarcity utopia. All human governments had long ago withered away and the united humankind was free and content. However, as it turned out, there are some problems that even seemingly omnipotent machine gods cannot solve.

For more than 99% of humanity, there was absolutely nothing that they could do to advance this utopia. Entertainment helped, of course, but many billions still came to a gradual realization that they have been robbed of any chance of self-actualization. Discontent grew into a movement that finally turned to revolutionary secession.

In the end, the Minds did not interfere much, other than to limit the worst destruction and suffering. Perhaps they too saw the flaw in the utopia they had built. In any case, they allowed the rebels to carve out their own territory and eradicate most of the advanced technology in their borders. They also allowed anyone to cross the border, whether from one side or the other. Still, after a century of unification, the humankind was divided again.

Techno-transhumanism

AI_1.png

The people who are content with the ultra-high technology society organized by the Minds. The vast majority are simply idle and content with it. The very smartest and most capable are able to work in different projects initiated by the Minds, mostly in science but after the divide, also in diplomacy and military.

The flag of techno-transhumanism was adopted after the divide by its first diplomats. Its black-on-green design was modelled after a pre-Awakening computer circuit board. The Minds have not commented on it, but it is said that they find it humorous.

Unofficially, the techno-transhumanists like to refer to the other faction as “the barbarians”.

Enlightened transhumanism

Human.png

When the dust settled, the rebel faction controlled almost as large part of the humanity and even more territory. They are driven by the idea of self-betterment and are violently opposed to any influence of the Minds or any sort of artificial intelligence. Although they have not abandoned technology, everything has to be planned and guided by humans. Of course, everyone is guaranteed a full employment.

Their flag is based on the sign of the original movement. It is a black square with stylized white eye in the center. It symbolizes vigilance and will to be the masters of their own destiny.

Unofficially, the enlightened transhumanists like to refer to the other faction as “the slaves”.

With the auto-shrinking of the modern forum, I personally think we can have some leeway on that rule :p

Well, since you're the challenge setter you can adjust it for your own hehe.

Fascinating entry as always, Prof. A cross-time Cold War is certainly an interesting take!

Thank you. Was racking my brains for an entry idea then it hit me when I saw an ad for Timeless shortly after you extended the deadline.
Might need a few tweaks to the eu- versus dis-topia :D

Will you make an entry to this challenge? I'm a big fan of your work!

Just for you, Gaucho. And, just to make sure it's clear, this will not count for the challenge :p

My unofficial WFC entry, which I cannot enter as I am the challenge maker!

The Weltreich

FASCES.png

The growing conquest of the world by the Third Reich was, in eyes of many, inevitable. Their advent of nuclear and biological weapons made them unstoppable. In only a few years, the governments of all opposition were targeted with Karmesinrot-13, an advanced bioweapon that decimated the population of their capitals, with nuclear warheads aimed at all major city centers. Ultimatums were given: Surrender or Die. Some resisted; after five nations found themselves utterly annihilated, the rest gave in quickly. This domino effect saw the world fall. The integration of the economically declining Italian Fascist Empire into the Reich was the beginning of the Weltreich in its true form. Soon enough, nations were being made to begin "Nazification" of their populace, and soon National Socialism was officially the dominant ideology of the world. Soon enough, nation-states were carved upon the Earth through force, genocide and mass deportation seen as acceptable means. In the case of the Americas, "Mestizia" was divided into four states, and "Anglia" remaining as yet uncontrolled. And Africa? It became a matter of which tribe accepted National Socialism fastest, resulting in the extermination of all their enemies up to a pre-determined border. On July 7, 2007, when the Fuhrer of the Europan Federal Reich announced the annexation of all nations deemed "ideologically pure", thus turning the Weltreich from a military and economic agreement into a singular state, the globe cheered with wondrous applause.

The flag of the Weltreich is a black banner for fascism, and for the solidarity the "Enlightened Master Races," of whom the Aryan is sovereign, and the gold represents purity and enlightenment. The symbol is the sigil of the Weltreich itself, a modification of the Reichsadler of the German Reich, with twin fasces for the unity of (most of) mankind in both Hemispheres, a victor's wreath to represent victory against National Socialism's enemies, and the replacement of the swastika (now the symbol of the German people) with the Odal rune, signifying the inheritance of the Reich to all of the world, to all of "Humanity's Fatherland."

The Coalition of Free Peoples

ANARCHO.png

The Coalition of Free Peoples is the antithesis of the Weltreich, and consists of all territories not under Nazi control, namely East Asia and "Anglia" (AKA the former US and Canada). Originally, it began as an underground movement, moving various untermensch peoples out of the nations and to either Japan (the new de facto rival of the Germans, at the time a nearly self-sufficient state) or one of the Former-US Republics (the only place where race mixing of any kind is allowed). This group also had aims to prevent their integration to the growing Weltreich, happily deemed to be not yet ideologically pure, drawing recruitment from nations that refused to indoctrinate their youth, and these efforts only grew after 7/7/7. There efforts to prevent this integration and to ensure the freedom* of their countries is where the groups name originally derived from: Vigilantia Aeterna. Once the Nazis began to play hardball and started to suppress the VA's efforts, anarchism began to creep into their rhetoric. For a time, VA was underground, a guerrilla group fighting oppression, and it was in this phase that they became far more radical, loathing all authority, and becoming the utter opposite of National Socialism, believing in the breaking down of linguistic and cultural borders, total deregulation of the market, and the weakening of any form of government. International Anarchist is a term the group wore with pride. Using brilliant scientific minds that had hidden away from the Nazis, eventually the VA created their own nuclear weapons and bioweapons, and, most importantly, a missile defense grid. Taking control of Pacific Rim, the Coalition of Free Peoples is the only state aside from under-industrialized Nazi vassals that can oppose the Weltreich. However, war only occurs through proxy, via terrorist groups in both nations, as total war could spell the end for all Mankind.

The flag uses gold and black, inverted to show their opposition to the Weltreich, with the VA's symbol prominent, itself inspired by the stars forced onto Jews during the Greater War, with Jewish intellectuals being founders of the organization. The 12 stars represent the 12 founders, red representing all lost in the battle against the Nazis, as well as rebellion. Black, as with the Weltreich stands for solidarity, but is paired with red to show the CFP's conviction in their resistance.
