Well, I really doubt any more entries are going to come in after 9 days, so I will just put up the vote thread.

Challenge:

Design a flag for a surviving ancient empire of East Asia. This includes Qing China, but not pre-Meiji Japan.

Preferably, include some worded description of the flag with explained symbolism (though this is not necessary)

The deadline is the 16th November, midnight GMT.

Greater Korean Empire

This is a flag for the Daehan-jeguk - Greater Korean Empire

History:
The Korean Empire OTL was annexed in 1910 by the Japanese. In this ATL the empire doesn;t get annexed, but is kept more like a puppet state:
for example the Korean Emperor is obligated to pay hommage to the Japanese Emperor each year.

Around the thirties a war breaks out between Japan and the Chinese Empire. The Koreans fight against the Chinese, but eventually a Korean nationalist rebel group
is able to fill a power vacuum, when the Japanese-Chinese war fall into a stalemate and the Korean Empire becomes a fully independant state, although parts of OTL (North)Korea was to be annexed by China.

Description:
The Flag depicts the Imperial Seal and 4 trigrams ( see for meaning of the trigrams: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_South_Korea)

Symbolism:
The flower symbol is the seal of the Imperial Seal (same as OTL).

Colours:
Red - Stands for struggle and vcitory. (Particularly the Independance wars against Japan and China).
White - Stands for harmony and peace.
Blue circle - Stands for the unity of the people.
Blue lines - Stands for the past and future of the people.

Flag of the Empire of Sena

Flag of the Empire of Sena

...The Palas were followed by the Sena dynasty who brought Bengal under one ruler during the 12th century. Vijay Sen the second ruler of this dynasty defeated the last Pala emperor Madanapala and established his reign. Ballal Sena introduced caste system in Bengal and made Nabadwip the capital. The fourth king of this dynasty Lakshman Sen initially had plans to extend the empire into India, and did have Orissa as a vassal state until 1852, but circumstances had started the move into south-east Asia. The first nation to fall was Kamarupa (Assam) folded by Arakan a decade later. Over the next 250 years the nations of south-east asia would fall to the Empire of Sena. To the north Tibet and the faltering Song Dynasty had no will to contest the rise of Sena. In the west the various muslim states that would hold sway over India could never quite take Sena...

...It is interesting to note that while India was the birth place of the Hindu and Buddhist faiths, it is only in the Empire of Sena and their Senada holdings (Indonesia) that these two faiths thrived...

- The flag is a sky blue representing Vishnu the One God.
- The two stalks of rice represent the people who are the strength of the empire.
- The tilak centered in the flag is that adopted by the Khakrabong Mangrai Sen in 1768, considered the strongest defender of Vaishnava, when the last Khmer warlord was beaten at Phnom Chosor.

Flag of the Khmer Empire

Flag of the Khmer Empire

Deviating from OTL, Siamese forces were defeated before reaching Angkor, thus preventing its sacking.

When Portuguese explorers first arrived, the Khmer were intrigued by the idea of a flag to represent their nation. Thus, a new flag for the empire was inagurated at the send-off ceremony of the explorers.

Colours

Blue, Red, Yellow and White are traditional Buddhist colours, while the green represents the lush land of the Khmer Empire

Dharmic Wheel

This represents the 8 principles of Buddhism, and is a common element on flags of Buddhist organisations (a version can be seen on India's flag)
