"We Shall Protect You" Native American State

"We have experienced your love, strong as the oak, and your fidelity, unchangeable as truth. You have kept fast hold of the ancient covenant-chain, and preserved it free from rust and decay, and bright as silver. Like brave men, for glory you despised danger; you stood forth, in the cause of your friends, and ventured your lives in our battles. While the sun and moon continue to give light to the world, we shall love and respect you. As our trusty friends, we shall protect you; and shall at all times consider your welfare as our own.”

-United States Congress Statement, 1777

1775-The Iroquois Confederacy effectivly splits apart as the Six Tribes of the Confederacy eventually take sides during the American Revolutionary War.

Four of the Tribes, The Mowhawks, Senecas, Cayugas, and the Onondagas side with the British for the most part with fewer rebel-leaning members.

The Oneidas and Tuscarora, side with the rebel colonists. They will become known as The First Allies and later United States Citizens.

Congressional statements, as you know, are sometimes just a bunch of well intentioned, but hollow phrases, full of noble intent, but soon forgotten. Why will this statement be diffrent from the others made by European nations during the preceding 250 years? I look forward to seeing how you flesh this out.

The hard part in any Native nation TL is keeping the American settlers out. Even with the US pledged to enforce treaties with the NA nations, settlers invariably just went in, set up towns in the NA lands, and, when the NA rightfully said "get off our land" and conflict ensued, called for US army "protection".

You'd have to have the govenrment be willing to let White Americans be killed and run off, which bodes poorly for one's reelection hopes.

As soon as one white American homestead gets burned, history goes as per OTL.

Uncontrolled expansion of white settlers into Six Tribes territory was ongoing before the revolution and, afaik, was one of the points of contention between the Colonies and England.

Your right, sad but true.

I have always dreamed of an independant Native American country timeline, but it seems impossible.

This edition of the Timeline will focus primarily on the Oneida, but will be updated later to include more.

1757-German Flatts. During the French and Indian War, the settlement of German Flatts is warned of a immenient attack from France, by the Oneida leader, Cheif Shenandoah. The most of the settlers believe the Oneida Cheif and flee into Oneida territory. A French force arrives a few days later and burns the town to the ground. Depsite the town's destruction it is not a general massacre due to the small amount of life lost.

August 6, 1777-Battle of Oriskany. A force of over 700 Patriot Militia and 60 Oneida are ambushed by a force of Loyalists and Mowhawks led by Sir John Johnson and the Cheif Joseph Brant. The battle is a victory for the Loyalist and Mowhawk forces, but is tarnished as a sortie from nearby Fort Stanwix destroys the Crown camps. Not only is the Crown force delayed from participating in the ongoing Saratoga campaign, but the intended prong in the campaign collapses as reiforcements under General Benedict Arnold causes the Crown forces to retreat.

October 1777- Battle of Saratoga. Oneida warriors fresh from the Stanwix campaign join Patriot forces. The Patriot forces led by General Horatio Gates, defeat the forces of British General John Burgoyne. The victory of this battle leads to France entering the war.

December 1777-June 1778- General Washington leads his battered, ill-equiped, and poorly fed army into Vallery Forge where they will face a harsh winter, but will be re-born in the Summer a effective fighting force. During this time, a group of Oneidaians and the Minister Sammual Kirkland travel to Valley Forge to supply food and aid to the Patriot army during the grueling winter months. The Oneidans, especially one Oneidan women, Polly Cooper and the Oneidan Cheif Shenandoah impress Washington greatly. Oneidan aide and conversations bewteen Washington and Shenandoah (one of which being of his exploit of saving German Flatts), leads to Washington have a great like and friendship with the Oneida.

Summer 1779-George Washington orderrs Major General John Sullivan to bolster the Oneidans and Tuscarora lands, to defned them from attacks by loyalists and rival tribes. Sullivan's Expedition is figured a partial sucess as while the defense of the First Allies leads the Natives to look better on the Patriots through sucessful defense. But, attacks on the other tribes by the Patriots and Oneida does ravange their lands, cripples their effectiveness in the war, but does not completely destroy or push the natives into Canada.
