Chapter 4 - Time for The Big Bang!
Chapter 4: Time for The Big Bang!

WCW: The Big Bang
May 6th, 2001
WCW Arena
Disney-MGM Studios

Monday, May 6th, 2001. While wrestling fans were content watching the WWF programs at the time. WCW was waiting. Despite some criticism from the wrestling fans and the press, WCW continues onward to their first special since the last Clash of the Champions in 1997. Despite good publicity from Disney to get people into the show, the WCW Arena, formally used for WCW Worldwide and other WCW content, was a bit smaller then what Bischoff was hoping for. Despite this, he was determined that he can turn his company back around.

Match 1: AJ Styles defeated Rey Mysterio Jr.

Match 2: Kid Romeo and Elix Skipper defeated (Jung Dragons (Kaz Hayashi and Yang)

Match 3: KroniK (Brian Adams and Brian Clark) defeated Sean O’Haire and Chuck Palumbo after Natural Born Thrillers distracted Sean and Chuck long enough for KroniK Brian Clark pinned Chuck Palumbo. KroniK wins the WCW Tag Team Championships.

Match 4: Bam Bam Bigelow defeated Norman Smiley

Match 5: Dustin Rhodes defeated Mike Awesome

Main Event: Booker T defeated DDP to retain the WCW World Heavyweight Championship

With Disney promoting the show and airing on their network. WCW had a lot going on to get done right. Luckily for WCW and Eric, there was new talent ready for their chance to shine. So to demonstrate what the new WCW X Division was all about. They had Rey Mysterio Jr. take on a new talent that signed before the WCW buyout was official, his name was AJ Styles. Another match was to set up a new rivalry between the former Natural Born Thrillers Sean O’Haire and Chuck Palumbo and their former leader Mike Sanders and the reformed stable.

In the main event, however, Booker T was originally scheduled to fight Goldberg but due to scheduling conflicts, DDP took his place. After the match, Mike Awesome comes to the ring and destroys both Page and Booker T with Awesome holding the title while his foot on Booker T chest. This would help set up a match-up between Booker T and Mike Awesome for the World Title at WCW first PPV since Greed in March, WCW Gret American Bash. Which would be held at the WCW Arena.

The first show wasn't a bad outing for the new WCW. Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Newsletter gave it a positive review despite being somewhat rushed. He did however prised Disney and Eric Bischoff on giving World Championship Wrestling a fresh spin after the terrible year 2000 was. The rating on ABC was good enough to continue onward with WCW Saturday Night on the network. Disney then boosts the budget for the company to have a better entrance stage.

After a rough start of the year, Eric Bischoff finally gave wrestling fans new hope for what was dubbed, a dead company. With Disney finally giving them the money they need, Bischoff needed to get WCW to make a profit. For now, things seem to be getting back on track. Now it was time for the first weekly WCW show since the end of Nitro. Saturday Nights on ABC were about to see some action.

"Finally got this uploaded. It took some time to figure out how to get it done but I believe this is the best way. Starting on the next chapter I will cover the WCW Saturday Night debut on ABC up to Great American Bash 2001. Stay tuned for it!"
