Washington kidnaps William IV????

I was browsing the Armenian Genocide and came across this little tidbit:

He served in New York during the American War of Independence. While the prince was in America, George Washington approved a plot to kidnap him, writing "The spirit of enterprise so conspicuous in your plan for surprising in their quarters and bringing off the Prince William Henry and Admiral Digby merits applause; and you have my authority to make the attempt in any manner, and at such a time, as your judgment may direct. I am fully persuaded, that it is unnecessary to caution you against offering insult or indignity to the persons of the Prince or Admiral…"[8][9] The plot did not come to fruition; the British heard of it and assigned guards to the prince, who had up till then walked around New York unescorted.[10]

What would've happened had Washington captured the prince? Could he have been used as a bargaining chip to have the British leave New York or something? How does this affect the greater Revolutionary War?

Any sympathy for the Colonials among the British people would likely evaporate.

The ARW was not really a war Britain was interested in fighting, but now that the royal family has been attacked, they are now more willing to fight.

LOL! Oh, William would be banished from the House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha for such a thing. But it'd be funny, yes.
Ah, just one nitpick. The Royal House was still the House of Hanover at that time. It would not become the House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha until Queen Victoria.

Well then, the House of Hanover would expel him. :) It'd be interesting if this won the support of some of the loyalists within the colonies.

You mean after Queen Victoria, she herself was the last Hanover on the British throne
