Was there ever a possibility for a larger Eastern Germany/DDR?

During WW2 the allies demanded a total surrender from Germany. There were many plans for how Germany were to be divided, reformed and controlled after WW2.

Is there any possibility that the Soviet controlled east germany could control Silesia and Pomerania in addition to OTL East Germany? Maybe if Poland recieved more post war compensation. What would Poland demand instead? Or how would the Polish relationship be with USA, Germany and Soviet union, aswell as other political peers? What would this alternate greater east germanys relationship with west germany, poland and soviet union be, aswell as other poltical peers?

How would the evolution of this greater east german state be? What would a Poland in such a scenario be? Poland would likely be more urbanised, which might allow for a wealthier society. While the greater east Germany would likely be more rural. Maybe Poland could get to occcupy Silesia and Pomerania?

It was my understanding that Stalin had the German land given to Poland to insure tensions between Germany and Poland. He felt that this would keep Poland close to the Soviet Union.

I agree, had Stalin seen a later advantage in a larger Eastern Germany he'd have arraigned it. But, Stalin was operating under assumptions set in early 1944 or even further back. The establishment of a Soviet controlled German state was not certain when the Soviet agencies went to work in Poland & the eastern German provinces.

Maybe... western Ukrainian nationalism is stronger and even more worrisome to Stalin.

In order to keep it from developing further, Stalin decides to limit the size of the Ukrainian ultra nationalist "cradle" in the far west Ukraine / far eastern Poland. He agrees to allow Poland to keep Lviv / Lvow and immediate surrounding territories to form a bridge to Poland. Rather, only the furthest eastern Polish territories with small number of Poles will be transferred to Ukraine.

Thus, Ukrainian nationalists remain Polish problems and are somewhat insulated from spreading their beliefs further east in Ukraine. As Poland's territorial loss is smaller, there is no need to compensate Poland with the same level of German territory. Silesia staying German was probably out of the question as it had a Polish plurality or even a small majority. Germany keeping Pomeria, however, seems far more possible.

Stalin dies before end of ww2. Whoever replaces him, he'll not have as strong negotiation position as Koba. As result other Neisse (Glatze Neisse) is border of Poland. Poland don't need to be compensated by anyone, although new Soviet leader could decide, that Lwów/Lviv in Poland would create stronger Polish-Ukrainian antagonism*, and giving Königsberg to Poland would allow Russians to play Germans against Poles more effectively (because now "good Russians" are not taking any German land, "evil Poles" are the only one to blame for territorial loses).

* And would be right about this. Lwów in Poland means extremaly irredendist Ukraine after fall of USSR, something like interwar Lithuania.

In "Hitler's Mediterranean Strategy", Socialist East Germany keeps eastern Brandenburg, and half of Silesia and Pomerania.

Poland could not demand anything. Pomerania and Silesia being given as compensation for the lost Kresy was just an excuse Stalin cooked up.

What's Kresy?
