Was Mao Yuanxin really delusional?

Rumsfeldia and other Gang of Four Comes to Power dystopian timelines: These feature Mao Yuanxin, nephew of Mao Zedong, as a psychopathic delusional tyrant who would bayonet his own babies and burn his own alive. In these TLs, he is prominent drug abuser, primarily contributing to his tyrannical attitude.

The question is, did Mao Yuanxin have these qualities OTL? Is it possible that if he really sat at the helm, he would just have been really Mao 2.0, without drugs, without killing his own people, with the Cultural Revolution only going on for another decade, but without the complete collapse of China?

He was a major ally of the Gang of Four IOTL, so he a hardliner and probably would have continued the Cultural Revolution for a while longer if he took power. However nothing in his biography, and very little in the Chinese Communist experience, suggests that he would be Khmer Rouge 2: Electric Genocideloo.

A more realistic take on his coming into power would be that he continues the Cultural Revolution for several more years (possibly purging his allies in the Gang of Four so he can take total power), before it becomes clear that the policy is extremely detrimental to China. It's possible he'd still be ruling today (he is still alive IOTL at the age of 74). The economic reforms of Deng Xiaoping (such as allowing people to start businesses and bringing in foreign investment) would not have been done, and China's economy would be very poor. Rather than an emerging superpower China would be doomed to second-rate power status, being cut off from a large part of the world economy, widespread poverty (Deng's reforms helped lift an estimated 170 million peasants out of extreme poverty), a totalitarian regime with a massive cult of personality, and probably fears of succession given Mao Yuanxin's age.

IIRC, in Mao: The Unknown Story, it is reported that he was particularly sadistic during the Cultural Revolution. It's been a while since I read that, but one of Maos nephews was mentioned and I am pretty sure it was Yuanxin.
