Having the Soldierking as a father really must have sucked...for everybody...just look at Paul von Gundling.

If I only know that about FWI, I really would have wondered whether he was just a stupid frat bro in a position of power. - In other ways, he wasn't incompetent, so why?

Well "Mon cher Katte" is more like "my dear Katte" , but yes overall his relationship with him was quite ambiguous. As for women , well his worst problems come from Maria-Teresa and mainly Elisabeth of Russia and was it me or he got quite a grudge toward Madame de Popamdour? This aside he seems close of his mother and sisters .

He also didn't like the wife he had to marry, for being ugly and smelling. But his father wanted it that way...

Friedrich Wilhelm I was really competent in fact. He turn his domain into a second rate power with a powerful army. But as a father he was close to a monster. I did believe der soldatenkoning was running by fear and frustration , and a control freak beyond redemption. But i like him as a historical figure. I'd like to say Friedrich the great had bad luck toward the women on some level. To say after that he was really homosexual , i still dunno.
