Was Deseret gone for good, even if the U.S. breaks apart in the 20th century?

Suppose the U.S. breaks apart for whatever reason in the 20th century. Stress of the Great Depression. Stress from 'Nam and the '60s in general. Militia movement in the '90s. By that time, it's too late for the LDS to try their hand at nationhood, because Deseret as an independent country just no longer existed as a concept after they achieved statehood?

I find it difficult to imagine the US breaking up, but if it somehow did, I should say that the "Mormon Country" of Utah and surrounding areas has as much of a distinct identity as anywhere. So why not?
