History has revealed that the Halifax was 1/4 the bomb carrier that the Lancaster was.
Sure once the Lanc was hit you stood a 1/7 chance of survival vs a 2/7 in the Halifax - but you were still safer in the horrible fuselage of the Avro because you were less likely to Shrage Musik in the Lancaster.
The B24 got built after consolidated said they would rather rolll their own than produce the B17. Was that a mistake by the US war office or was it a wise decision resulting in the most produced aircraft ever (Me109 excepted)
It carried more bombs, further, faster than the Fortress but why did the B17 end up as aircraft of choice.
So should the War Department have forced the B17 on Consolidated?
