Was a 2-Chinas agreement ever feasible?

What I have in mind is something similar to what Willy Brandt worked out with East Germany, continuing to assert that there is one Chinese nation while acknowledging that there are 2 Chinese states and giving them both UN membership (not sure what would be done about the Security Council seat). Obviously the best time for this would be the '60s and '70s, before the ROC started bleeding international recognition. Removing Chiang from power might be necessary.

Maybe if the RoC stopped claiming other nations as well and agreed with the PRC on the borders of China?

That's a must. You must remove Mao from power as well. Both had egos big enough to declare all of China. And the ROC claiming land that violated other borders was out of Chiang's stubbornness (he reexpanded the border claimss to not match the PRC so they would include Outer Monglolia; basically a "fuck you" to the Soviets). When the ROC bleeds international recognition, the PRC starts thinking it will be able to annex Taiwan in time. After this, Taiwan can't change it's claims to represent the current situation since Beijing will take it as a declaration of independence. I think if Taiwan claimed the current PRC borders (no Outer Mongolia, Tuva etc) they would get away with it though, but no one's been that gutsy.

I sometimes wonder how much shit would hit the fan if Taiwan claimed the current PRC borders sans Tibet and Xianjiang just to piss Beijing off :D

I agree with both of you!

I'm sorry that such opportunity for easing the tensions between China and Taiwan was not used...
