Warsaw Pact question

Question for all of you. In 1980 which side's forces would of have won in a straight up fight, with no WMD? All available forces are put into use for this.

Warsaw Pact Naval forces vs NATO Naval forces

Warsaw Pact Air Forces Vs NATO Air Forces

Warsaw Pact Tank and armored Forces vs NATO Tank and Armored forces

Warsaw Pact Special Forces vs NATO Special Forces

Warsaw Pact regular Infantry vs NATO Infantry

Warsaw Pact Marines vs NATO Marines

We now know that

By 1980 the Russians fully expected the poles to switch sides from day one if the big one started with a red attack on Europe. Plus we were flying F16 and F15 and they were still up there in MiG23 MiG21 piloted target drones along with pre PDS update MiG25. They had good tanks, with the T72 in service along with older models, but they would face a beehive of TOW missiles on every hilltop, backed by superbly trained crews in chieftains, Leo I and AMX30.
We would have stoped them not far from the border, then rolled back the iron curtain as all the countries forced into socialism in 1945 rebelled.
And yes, I play on the NATO team...

I'm no expert, and I'm going to assume an ASB-like prevention of WMDs.

Although the WP armored forces outnumber NATO by a ridiculous factor, the fact still stands that NATO's superior training and technological edge would even the playing field significantly. I think it'd be a bit more of a toss up, if you ask me.

Mostly agree with Tyranicus but...
WP armor is mostly an advantage in numbers, NATO equipment has an edge overall as do individual crews. Also, NATO special forces at least as good as WP, if WP has an advantage it is that during an initial assault they will have a better network of supporters behind NATO lines, while elements in certain WP countries will aid NATO WP SF will have better network of safe houses, collaborators etc to begin with. Also, the "openness" of the west (even if in a pre-war warning mode) will make things easier for WP SF.

The question also remains as to how hard the WP foot soldier would have fought for a government many hated.

So in the end NATO Air, Infantry, Marines and possibly Naval forces would be left to deal with Warsaw Pact Tanks and Armor and special forces. Hm that's interesting. Thanks

Just on the Air-Force side, the Americans retired the A-5 Vigilante in January of that year, leaving the Soviets with the Tu-22 and (rather more rare) Tu-22M, which may shift the balance just a little closer to their favour.

Hm thanks, I'm in a discussion with so one over who would have won in a straight up Warsaw Pact vs NATO fight, and he seems to believe that if nuclear weapons are not used the Warsaw Pact would have won. By winning he means getting to the French border. We both figure the French would use their arsenal if the Russians crossed the border.

Wasn't WMD a crucial part of the doctrine?
It was yes; Soviet plans that came to light following the end of the Cold War all showed Soviet nuclear strikes against NATO air bases, military bases, command and control facilities, ports and nuclear facilities. The Soviet assumption was that NATO would use nuclear weapons from day one and if war became inevitable then their only hope of surviving would be by pre-empting the NATO attack.
