War over Oregon boundary 1844

Does anyone here believe the Dispute between the United States and the British Empire over the Oregon territory could it have led to a war ? From my opinion I would say yes, the Polk administration was very involved in getting manifest destiny into circulation, one of the slogan's for Polk's campaign was "Fifty four forty or fight !" If a war erupted I would say fighting would be pretty small, mostly frontiersmen militia against a small British force, most of the fighting would take place in wooded areas. So, any opinions on what if a war erupted over Oregon ?

doubtful

Unlikely. If I recall correctly the British were avoiding war at that time. It wasn't very easy for them to defend Canada and wars in American were expensive. The more likely outcome would be negotiations.

If it did escalate would imagine there wouldn't be much activity in Oregon directly. For the British it would take time send in troops and supply them properly. For the Americans the poor organization and quality of militia at that time would hamper any attempts to invade. I believe it would mainly be defensive skirmishes.

If I recall correctly, all that stuff from Polk was largely posturing and politicking. He had no desire to go to war with the British and, again IIRC, didn't expect the border to be much beyond the boundary that it would be drawn in the end, and didn't expect the US to get even that.

Didn't Seward try and get people to go up that way and make it by people our territory so we would have land connecting it to Alaska before he bought it?
