War on the moon around 1980

1965: An astonished World watches as Sovjet cosmonauts land on the moon, and plans are announched to the world that the USSR plans to begin construction of a space station both in orbit and on the moon. The United States and Britain protests this action at the UN, but the Sovjet UN representative dismisses the Western complaints are pure capitalist propaganda.

The oribiting space station called Peace is finished in 1968 and two years later the permanent planet based station red october become operational.

Meanwhile insteed of civilian space program under NASA as known in our timeline, the US Space Program is a millitary one controlled by the pentagon.

Meanwhile in 1966 MIT scientist Carl Ludwieg Svenson a brilliant physicist constructs the first and very powerfull iondrive-engine which could be used to bring America into the Cosmos.
in 1968 unknown to the USSR, President Lyndon B. Johnson orders the creation of the first space division of USMC later known as the USSM which sole purpose is to defend the United States from attack from Communist presence on the moon. And eventuelly liberate the moon.

What will see first? A race for Mars? Or an American attack on the moon around 1980?

What do you guys say?

I really cant see a war happening on the moon. The cost of fighting such a war would be so high it would bankrupt both sides very quickly. Plus you have massive logistics problems of getting supplies to the moon. A race to mars is most likely in my opinion.

Hm... Well, how exactly did the Soviets manage to get to the moon so fast? And why such a fast tech advance?

Also, NASA is very much a military/government organization. And what do you mean for a 'liberation' of the moon? What is their to liberate? The only people there would be very patriotic Soviet astronauts.

And it's not like an American-Soviet war over the moon would be any less costly or any more likely than OTL.

The Soviets conquered the Draka and used their technology. They also gained their mindset as part of the bargain...

I was told in Highschool history class that NASA got it own founding and wasn't completely controlled by the Pentagon.
If thats wrong then take it out on my history teacher, not me

Anyway the reason why the USSR is able to land on the moon in 1965 is that a UFO crashes outside of Moscow around 1950.

Maybe the russians have been able to build anti-gravity tanks with alien technology. And stationed them on moon.

A race for Mars? How many ships? Who would build them?

And why liberated the moon? Because the Russians are there, and its a embarasement to the US that Russia landed their first.

Or a side note what if there wasn't a Rosewell crash, but an a meeting between Trumann government and friendly aliens who offered to share technology with the humans?

Soviets land on the moon in US 1965?

US government panics. Massive increases in Apollo funding. Orion gets funded too.

If you're going to write a timeline, do at least a little research

Yeah. Uhuh.

Are you serious?

A race for Mars? How many ships? Who would build them?
The same people who made the anti-grav tanks, apparently.

And why liberated the moon? Because the Russians are there, and its a embarasement to the US that Russia landed their first.
Did Russia "liberate" the moon after the US landing?

Or a side note what if there wasn't a Rosewell crash, but an a meeting between Trumann government and friendly aliens who offered to share technology with the humans?
The Roswell crash was a US experimental aircraft test. The Government allowed the UFO theory to gorw to confuse the Soviets.

So, yeah, your timeline is very, very, bad and ASB.

I don't believe there is any reason to insult him by calling his timeline very, very bad. I mean at least he is trying even if it is ASB.

that seanrio remains me of a videogame i played 10 years ago
was over Sovjet vrs USA Anti-grav Tankswars on Moon mars Venus ....
also by found alien tech... so ABS.

Back to old times
in end 1950s US Army, Navy, USAF (USMC also ?) proposed Military space programs
like Army HORIZONT or USAF LUNEX
http://www.astronautix.com/craft/hortpost.htm
http://www.astronautix.com/craft/lunition.htm

the Study consider also fighthing on lunar surface.

President Kennedy wandet a pure civilian space program under NASA.
and not head up the Cold War by instal a military base on Moon

so with Not UFO crash and Alien High Tech.
you can get with normal Tech to Moon und bulid Military Base in 1969
and got still 11 years until War on Moon

Clive Cussler made a story like that. It might say something about how likely I find the senario.

But since this is alternatehistory.com and realhistory.com then we are allowed to play with whatif ;)

How would the cold war on Earth play out? Would this fight in space between the super powers be unknown to general population?

Well, the idea is to discuss plausible divergences. Anything with aliens goes in ASB (probably) or Future History (if it's about the future).
