War on Drugs Spreads to Africa

I'm already aware that there are African cartels that help transport illicit narcotics across the continent to Europe. However, is it possible that some parts of the continent can be centers for producing narcotics (like Congo or Uganda or Cameroon) as well? How successful would these cartels be? And how serious can the narcotic trade get on the continent? And how does the U.S., other nations, and law enforcement in general respond to the phenomenon?

Guinea-Bissau is practically a narco state as it is and several high-ranking military officers from there have been arrested by the US, so it's as sensible of a place as any to set up drug labs or whatever you need.

Hm. The US spreads the WOD to Africa. The social agenda of Nancy Reagan, fused with the logistics on the '93 Somali intervention. That is a recipe for...well, something other than success.

Seriously, they would need some sort of client state on the continent to take charge, like Tanzania did in ousting Amin, and I don't know who that would be.

Why did this not happen OTL?

What would have to motivate the US for that? And how would a illicit narcotics industry take off?

Do you mean what would have to motivate the US to establish a client state to fight its WOD in Africa? Simply the fact that Africa is a pretty complicated place, and you would need an ally who knows the lay of the land very well, in order to accomplish anything militarily.

Doesn’t have to be large states. It can be small states too. Also the US would still go in if a state like C.A.R. or Congo had cartels mass-producing illicit narcotics.

Halting the khat trade would be amusing!

The US military got what they came for basically when they arrested the main figures. Most of Guinea-Bissau's narco-economy came from the fact it was a key transshipment point for drugs. Not too much local production to my knowledge.

Why wasn't Africa considered a place to produce illicit narcotics?

Imagine al-Qaeda trying to profit out of it.

plus you would have to arm them to the teeth and stamp out the corruption and outright bribery . etc.etc..

the US is far from perfect .. and corruption is rampant as is bribery et all. and anyone who says it isn't is full of it, since most of this is done on corporate and lobbying levels. the war on drugs if it was taken to Africa would be ugly and a stain on America as racist and inhumane. say armed Zimbabwe or some other state to the teeth and said hey.. free money and weapons .. just do what we say or let us base there. this would get ugly quickly ad the soviets would proxy against.

Some square-jawed yank shows up in a Somali village ready to do "This is your brain..." with an egg and frying pan, then finds out there's no electricity.

You know between the diamond, timber, people, weapons, artifacts smuggling and the poaching I wonder if the US would try to stop these as well. It would all be money for any drug runners too, and I doubt that the drugs would be ran with just drugs alone.

Zimbabwe wasn't the kind of state that would buddy up to the U.S. though. I would see this as an excuse for African nations to fight against one another.

It would intertwine so much that it might give Latin American cartels ideas.

well it wouldn't be the first time the USA was buddy pal with nations one wouldn't expect, plus I was just tossing out an example, you could use Ethiopia, south Africa, Nigeria, possibly Morocco as well.

Eqypt, while they very remotely might, Libya wont, Algeria isn't exactly happy, the congo and other nations are not pushing the democratic gig's combined with the last vestiges of colonialism are being thrown off during the 80's means that most of Africa is simply not going to fight the white mans war on drugs.

there are only 2-3 ways to fight the war on drugs - all suck and are just not going to win said war with out destroying what is the united states. also in fighting said war one would require that the united states to also not be a corrupt assbag

TBF the US has been a corrupt assbag for a long time already. Also they won’t destroy the US either, and the OTL War on Drugs isn’t performing any well either. I wouldn’t see a War on Drugs in Africa as a success, but rather a scenario that has the potential to raise hell on the continent.
