war of prussian succession

IRL wilhelm 1st was convinced not to abdicate but this scenario is based on the premise that he does abdicate
Wilhelm 1st steps down as emperor of germany, Frederick 3rd next in line for the throne becomes kaiser. Prinz Fritz Karl & Bismark attempt a coup to overthrow the "liberal" monarch. The people rally behind frederich believing that freedom and liberty will come to germany under his reign. Bismark prinz Fritz both are either:shot, exiled ,imprisoned. Due to the chaos in Germany Russia and austria join forces to keep germany from becoming to powerful.

well I guess i really should know the date because I read so much about German history.:eek::eek:

For the sake of the idea lets say this takes place early 1880's. I will find out the actuall date using one of the many books i have.

I can see the UK making Normandy the Alsace-Lorraine of this timeline.
The problem with this scenario was that Germany actually had a national claim to A-L, which had significant numbers of Germans in addition to the French. Normandy is just French, and has been that way for centuries. Combine that with a general British disdain for continental possessions, and the territory is a pointless acquisition that will serve only to anger France.

First off lets be more realistic. Japan and the United States wouldn't be involved. I'm not quite sure why Russia would be attacking Germany. I would think it entirely like that Alexander III would intervene on the behave of Germany in order to keep a conservative government in place. The Ottomans aren't going to do anything they've got problems of their own.

Terminology fail. How would this be a war of succession? And how would it be exclusively Prussian? Rather, that would be the German Civil War. And why would Austria and Russia attack a friendly power? At the time of William I the only real enemy Germany had was France.
