Dear all,

I don't know if this is really a topic for this forum or not. Please forgive me if not.

I think we all believe that a war in western Europe is not on the cards anymore. Cannot happen.

Flandern wil never be a battle field again.

If we look at the European history, probably from 1870-1910, nobody really would be believe it. France was isolated, Bismark was in control, economy going ok (up and down, yes i know).

Inventions of all kind every morning, world exhibitions, royal families all inter-related.

Then WWI.

Now WWI may also have been the first war between nations. previous wars were more between armies and rulers (using mercenaries, etc).

Yes, the civilians still suffered, but were non-combatants.

Now, can it happen again in Europe?

It is too easy to look at Germany vs france or something like that. Even to let the Balkans in.

What about some "crazy" scenarios:

1) France is supporting the basque nationalists and Spain is getting tired of it. Border clashes develop into full scale conflict. Germany gets pulled in and UK send another BEF - or something

2) Italy vs france

3) New oil field in the North Sea, Holland and UK clashing

...or something just as unlikely, or is it??
