Right, lads so I thought good old Italy deserves a good ol' fashioned wank. So we want a wank for Italy, with PODs after unification we want them having as muchos territory as possible and all of the cheeky colonies they want. Course we have them absolutely DESTROYING Ethiopia. We'll have their colonies better managed, it'll be fun. Other stuff too, you should do PODs after 1900 too but not after 1922 (no moose man business).

Due you mean annexation when you say destroying Ethiopia?

It is a bit difficult to get Ethiopia "the first round" with an after 1900 POD, seeing how Adua was in 1896...

Anyways, with a post-1861 POD I think your best bet for an Italy "wank" is a longer lived Cavour, leading to better management of the immediate post-unification years and to better preparation for the eventual war with Austria.

Then 1866 could go much smoother, leading to Italian Trentino and maybe a better border in Friuli. (Trieste would be too far I think).
Italy would also likely not be humiliated at Lissa and would have more self-esteem in the 70's/80's. Maybe butterflies could lead to avoiding the "slap of Tunis". I don't think annexation of Ethiopia would be really useful, but a real protectorate and maybe enlarging Eritrea a bit could...

If you want a post-1900 PoD, more smoother war with the Ottoman in 1911 achievied with the political and military enstablishment being more decisive and aggressive in the immediate start of the conflict, in this manner the cost (both economic and social) will be more limited and the butterfly in the Balkan minimal. As a plus, a much less problematic Ottoman war mean that Cadorna is not the Chief of staff of the army during WWI.
With the start of WWI, the best option are to get rid of Cadorna the quickest and getting someone that can manage better the men (soldiers and officer alike) and have a more conciliatory relationships with the politicians, if a national unity goverment is created from the beginning things will be more calm during and more importantly after the conflict..
Avoid Caporetto, lessen the total loss (even the cost of the war if the better management reduce the duration of the war) and keep the italian delegation at the Versailles conference and not only you will get a better treatment both (colony included) but you will avoid Benny

Or... offer a face saving deal to the Ottomabs for Lybia, without Ottoman officers organising them the local revolts might be easier to keep under control and I think I read somewhere there was a sale proposal being made around 1910/1911.

For WW1 another good option could probably be keeping neutrality, but I am not sure if that would be politically feasible.

Both are very good move, but i was trying to keep butterfly at minimum; and stay neutral in WW1 and later play vulture over A-H corpse will create a lot of them and can be politically possible (but need a more assertive Giolitti or a more forcefull Germany), plus no Italian-Ottoman war mean no Balkan wars (or they can start later and become the reason of the start ofWWI)

Cavour lives longer > leads better delevlopment of Italian economy and army > better performance in 1866 > Italy annexes Trento and Gorizia and Gradisca > Italy attacks France during FPW, annexes Corsica, Nice and Savoy > During Eastern Crisis Italy grabs Tunisia > During Cretean Crisis, Italy grabs Crete > Italy crashes Ethiopia and annex it > Italy gets Libya with war or buying > During ALT WWI, Italy gets Dalmatia, Albania, Egypt and Sudan.
Also I think these options are not unlikely:
Italian Philipinnes
Italian Formosa
Italian Aceh
Italian Indochina
Italian Congo (I have no idea how we can achieve this)
Italian Yemen

*ahem* can we please have some decorum with in naming threads?

jkjkjkjk

On a serious note, maybe Italy gains more of the Tunisia region?

No way all of those bolded ones are happening at once, as it assumes Italy getting stuff from both sides. It's either Dalmatia or Egypt, not both

Depends on how things shake out but yes.

Italy could definitely have gotten a seat at the table with Suez though.

All things considered I think Italy's best strategy is to sit out whatever cluster**** kicks off in the 20th century. It was precisely the dreams of territorial annexations that led her to ruin in both World Wars.

As OTL is more or less an Italyscrew from 1400 onwards, you can do a lot without it being a wank. Even just a relatively recent PoD (Cavour not dying, as pointed out by some) can result in Italy being comparable to Germany in wealth (if not in heavy industry - the materials just aren't there). The further back you go, the greater a wank it can become, but that's beyond the point of the thread.
