Wallis Simpson dies in 1936

Very quick query for you all, if Wallis Simpson had died in 1936, before Edward VIII had abdicated what would happen? Would Edward ascend the throne as expected? Would he look for a new wife after a period of time?

What I have heard he was pretty much the opposite of his brother George, he was a playboy and lacked self-restraint (i.e. finances) so I sort of expect you would do something else moronic. And considering his comments when WWII started -("Red and Jews") its difficult to hypothesize how he would react, remember the government nearly resigned in protest this shows he was willing to go to the edge if he wanted something.

Final word: He was a prick and I doubt he would've been a good King the Monarchy was lucky to get rid of him.

He would be quite traumatized to be sure - but he would probably be vulnerable to falling for someone else to fill that void.

The most interesting immediate consequence is that I believe the Free State constitution would remain in place, so they would retain a Governor General representing the monarch in Dublin, which could be significant come 1939.

Edward VIII's coronation speech will include the vow to find the person responsible for the death of the woman he loved.

He's going to see it as an assassination, I don't care if she chokes on an olive or has an allergic reaction to shrimp, he's going to be sure she was murdered. However, if it occurs AFTER her divorce nisi is granted, he'll lose what passes for his mind and there will be a short regency until E8 "steps down" and then George has the throne shoved down his throat anyway.....

Wallis and David (to give him the name he was personally used) wed in 1937. This TL posits she died in 1936; means they never wed. In fact, she wasn't FREE to marry him until spring, 1937. You keep saying "new" wife, he would never had had one if this occurred.

No, I don't think he would have married. He didn't want to marry anyone suitable; that was the appeal of the Freda Dudley Wards, the Thelma Furnesses, the Wallis Simpsons, they weren't suitable.....Wallis, once dead, would be the impossibly 'high' standard to which all other women would be measured.
