Wallace without the "Southern Strategy"

In the 1968 Election, how would George Wallace have fared if the Republicans did not employ the "Southern Strategy", and focused on winning voters outside of the south? Could Wallace have forced an Electoral Tie? and what would be the aftermath of this?

How would the Republicans (lets assume a Liberal Republican like George Romney or Nelson Rockefeller won the nomination) and Humphrey preform?

Wallace almost forced a hung college IOTL. He would support Humphrey over Nixon or Rockefeller, but probably Romney over Humphrey. Then he challenges the winner in 1972.
