VP and cabinet?

I'm not sure where to put this so I'll put it here: How much influence does a VP have on cabinet choices? Just curious.

When you are looking at "regional balance" it can be very important. The one that sticks in my mind is when Lincoln was looking again at VPs to replace Hannibal Hamlin in 1864. Lincoln looked at Daniel (?) Dickinson of New York as a replacement VP, but that would have meant replacing Seward (also of New York) as Secretary of State.

I am not sure if it remained a big issue into the 1900s?
