Von Hindenburg Dismisses Hitler

In response to OperationGreen
I still hold that if the fight really was a simple as the standing Reichswehr vs. the SA, the result would be a victory to the SA, based solely upon them greatly outnumbering their opposition. Which, no matter how you look at it is enough. Training, armament and what not would not matter, when one side outnumbers the other by at least 10:1.

If with a 1:10 proportion only numbers matter and nothing else, you'd need to explain why POW camps and KZ camps did not fall under control of the POWs and inmates. Why, even today's jails should be ruled by the inmates.

Having talked to people who had relatives in Germany at the time Hindenburg was much more popular than Hitler and it is quite possible that Hindenburg could rally the German nation to his side. It is highly unlikely that the SA would be willing to fight the Reichwehr. If Hindenburg appointed someone like the former Bavarain Crown Prince he would have someone who was capable and popular to do battle. It is even possoble that the British could be approached to approve an offical increase in the German military so as to restore order in Germany. If Britain approved it is unlikely that France would do anything. It is also likely that Hindenburg would move to restore the Maonarchy so as to prevent another Hitler from seizing power.

From what I know about the time I tend to agree. Going up against Hindenburg would mean the dissolvement of the nazi movement incl. the SA.

BTW did SA even have arms beyond spades and daggers at this time? Even if small arms etc. are present I doubt if a 10:1 superiority in numbers is enough against formed and well trained Divisions, especially if the latter have "liberal" rules of enegagement.

Without a doubt if Hindenburg, the Hero of Germany, turned against Hitler then he was finished. The Reichwehr would be able to crush the SA as they were better trained and equipped.
If Hindenburg moved to restore the monarchy he would also gain the support of a lot of World War I veterans , the monarchist and more moderate rightwing groups. the Reich President could count on the support of people such as the Bavarian Crown Prince, who was leading a movement to restore the Bavarian Monarchy and who couldn't stand the Nazis.

If Hitler challenged Hindenburg it would be his downfall, and I think Hitler knew that. If Hitler had been dismissed he would angrily complain about the old guard, but not take drastic measures. Hindenburg was old and weak, he wouldn't live forever. Hitler could still make a comeback, even though he'd need to fight hard to keep the Nazi movement together.

If Hindenburg restored the monarchy then Hitler is through forever. If Hindenburg appointed the Bavarian Crown Prince as Chancellor or as commander of the Military then Hitler and the Nazi leadership would constantly be on the run or dead.
