Yes I know Virginia was a slave state with at least at one time some of the harshest slavery laws of any state. Maryland was also a slave state and went Union in the Civil War.
My question is, what if Virginia had decided by a strong margin to remain in The Union? How does this change The Civil War? Two things come to my mind.
The first is that Robert E. Lee would have been a Union general. The second is that it would have made for a much shorter Civil War.
In TTL I'm assuming sometime after the war that Lee instead of Grant would have been elected President of The United States. What kind of U.S. President would Lee have made?
