Vince Lombardi

I remember seeing on a doc about him that he was recommended by a alum familiar with Lombardi's work at Army and with the Giants to be the coach at Wake Forest but that they would never consider him due to the fact that he was Italian and ended up with some cat named Paul Amen, who ended up better known as a banker.

WI Lombardi gets that gig?

Wake Forest becomes a college powerhouse. Some cat named Brian Piccolo leads the NCAA in rushing in 1964. Soon thereafter, Lombardi moves on to the NFL, has a lot of success, though maybe not as much as OTL.

He also went to the Eagles in the late 50's. Bert Bell, the NFL Commissioner at the time, called Lombardi to tell him about the Eagle job. Right after that, however, Wellington Mara, who was the Giant VP then, called Vince and said that the Eagle owners always argued, and that it would make him frustrated and helpless.

A year later, Green Bay offered him the coaching job, but also gave him managing duties as well. He took it, and the rest was history.
