"U.S. Won't Intervene in Egypt," Says Lodge.

8 October, 1956

Secretary Lodge has told press representatives at the State Department that the United States has no intention to intervene in Egypt, which has seen political and social instability. "The United States wishes for an end to the violence," he said, "but we must be cautious in our actions."

This is of special concern to the Government of Israel, which hoped that the Dulles Administration would step in and prevent troops siding with Seddik from seizing control of the country. The Israeli Defense Force has deployed reinforcements to the southern border. Foreign Minister Naftali told Associated Press, "we have no choice but to be prepared for events that we do not want."

Senator Symington, at a campaign stop in Houston, warned that "we cannot stand idly by" during "a most dangerous time," while Senator Gabrielson, speaking in Baltimore, agreed that "we must consider our national interest before taking any action" but reminded "we should be prepared for such action."
