Vietnam War- US aircraft carriers sunk by fires

Read about the Franklin (CV-13) in WW2.

Really bad fires on a carrier may kill a lot of people, but with any kind of decent damage control, the ship - esp. a big one like a carrier - should not sink.

So your POD is unlikely, with an accident on deck.

Now if you have some ordnance detonate in the CVs magazine, deep inside the ship, that could easily be fatal. Very unlikely again, because that stuff isn't fuzed down there and is handled with great care. But if someone, through carelessness or intent, caused a big explosion deep inside a CV, then maybe you could sink her. Its never happened, but who knows?

Effect of losing one CV in Vietnam? Congressional uproar and dithering. Lots of heartbroken families. Very little effect on the war.

From what I understand the Forrestal was in danger because the firefighting flooded the ship quite badly giver her a serious list. Good damage control would save the ship, but shit does happen.

It may have an effect on the antiwar movement if such a powerful, expensive ship sinks with major loss of life.
