Vietnam set up the Federation of Indochina

What if Vietnam wins in the war with Cambodia and rebuild the Federation of Indochina? Maybe the Vietnam would be the hero as liberate the Cambodian from Rouge Khmer. And the Authority would claim the China's Guangdong , Guangxi and even Hong Kong and Macau. As the history of South Yue kingdom in the Qin fall and early Han Dynasty of ancient China. The China and Fed Indochina might on the road to war.

The Vietnamese were greeted positively by the Cambodians as they liberated them from the extremes of the Khmer Rouge rule.

As for the remainder I would feel that their historical claims to southern China have lapsed if you are using the Yue dynasty.

They would have more bargain power if they take Cambodia and Laos.

And why would China bargain with them to give away some of their most populous territory away to a comparitively weak nation whose argument is based on weak, antiquated claims and which would not benefit China in the slightest?

damn near everyone regarded the Vietnamese invasion positively... I can remember even the radical right wing "Soldier of Fortune" magazine wishing them good luck in their fight against the Khmer Rouge.

As for the OP... The Viets could hardly make any claims to any part of China, but they could weld Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia into a federation. However, wouldn't this place be a lot like the Congo... a cobbled together 'nation' of many assorted tribes and cultures who speak a lot of different languages and have a lot of enmities and little in common?

On the contrary the West adopted an enemy of my enemy is my friend mindset. Thailand provided shelter for the Khmer Rouge in exile. Australia and America gave covert support to the Khmer Rouge. The international community CONDEMNED the Vietnamese invasion. And of course China tried to invade Vietnam in retaliation.

And then in the end the Cambodians got tired of the absolute Vietnamese failure to defeat the Khmer Rouge insurgency and turned against them as well.

true enough, on the government level, at least. But practically every newspaper article/magazine I read at the time noted that the KR were so awful that the Viets were the better option by far...
